Another Walter Reed Nut Case!

America was shocked when a psychiatrist who once worked at Walter Reed Hospital went wild and shot his fellow soldiers. Lt.Col. Terrence Lakin is the latest nut case to emerge from that hospital. He is a decorated flight surgeon who has refused to deploy to Iraq because he believes President Obama can not be his commander-in-chief due to having been born in Kenya! Lakin questions whether his president is really his president. “Any reasonable person looking at the evidence in the public domain would have questions about the Obama claim to be a natural born citizen.” A man with extensive education who has attended universities and interacted with outstanding minds emerges from this intellectual experience with ideas that make no rational sense.

Colonel Lakin is most probably and outstanding surgeon, perhaps it is time for him to do a frontal lobotomy on his own mind and uncover the logic part which seems to be seriously damaged.

Is Paranoia Sweeping The Land?

Men and women wander the streets of America carrying weapons and shouting slogans of hate and violence. Over half of members of the Republican party believe their president was born in Africa and is a secret Muslim with connections to terrorist groups like al-Qaeda. Simply express the words, “Wall Street” and fury enters the eyes of most Americans who believe themselves to be oppressed and violated by bankers, hedge fund managers and anyone who works in the firms which manage the nation’s economy. Tune in Rush or Glenn and one can only wonder if their weird ideas about concentration camps and death panels is actually believed or simply another ploy to secure more viewers to their programs of hate and violence.

This is not the first time in American history in which such forces of hatred have been heard in the land. The decades preceding the Civil War witnessed an explosion of anti-Catholic fear that is remarkably similar to the one now expressed against Muslims. Convents were attacks, churches burned and bills introduced to limit entry of Catholics into America. The famous “Know-Nothing Party” had former president Fillmore as their candidate in the 1850s and he secured nearly 15% of the vote in a presidential election.

Perhaps, the fundamental difference this time around is presence of media which enables hate messages to be sent all over the land to receptive minds seeking answers in a time of conflict and change. The central question is how can sensible leaders confront paranoia when it is felt by so many millions of Americans? We suggest President Obama must learn to be clearer in his presentation of ideas, he must focus on job creation and not simply refer to a stimulus plan, but pinpoint exactly how and where jobs are being created. He must offer a vision of the future that encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to believe that vision includes them.

Netanyahu, The Magician, Now You See It, Now, Don’t

It increasingly becomes clear that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to cast his future with the right wing of Israel even if it means conflict with the United States. His current Cabinet is a coalition of conservative and religious groups whose vision of Israel is that it should extend from the sea to wherever it can go. A few people from the Labor party are in the Cabinet, but most likely they will be dumped in favor of even more representatives from parties like Yisrael, Shas, Likud and Beiteinu. Netanyahu is willing to gamble that by refusing to budge one inch, it will force Barack Obama to defy Israel and risk losing Jewish voters this fall to the Republican party. If Republicans win in the fall, it strengthens Netanyahu and dooms any hope of compromise with Palestinians.

The question is what can President Obama do about this gamble? So far, he is sending mixed signals. A recent article by his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel was pro-Israel while an article by George Mitchell’s adviser, Martin Indyk was hostile to Israel. If Obama fails to take a strong stand with Netanyahu he dooms hope of peace. Obama must also gamble that Netanyahu can not defy America and survive.

Who blinks first is the question?

Danish Artists Remove Israel From Map

Danish artists Jan Egesborg and Pla Bertelsen are intent on striking a blow for peace and justice in the Middle East and decided the proper approach was to delete the nation of Israel from a map of the Middle East. They insisted their goal was not to criticize anyone but to illustrate the nation if Israel as primarily responsible for all problems in the region. They even asserted creation of Israel was an historical mistake. Perhaps, these artists have hit on an interesting approach to dealing with nations which supposedly violate international law. I assume the artists will shortly remove from their map of the world:

Saudi Arabia
Iran
China
Sudan
Myanmar

I trust you get the point. Israel’s record on human rights will never match the nation of the Congo or what is happening in Zimbabwe. I assume the artists lack any knowledge of the world and those nations which violate human rights.

Gordon Brown Dumbs Down Over Woman

This has not been a good year for Prime Minister Gordon Brown from the moment economies all over the world collapsed to the institution of the Chilcot inquiry which has revealed one blunder after another in the Tony Blair government in which he served. The PM was on the political trail when he was introduced to an elderly woman who supported his Labor party. After a seemingly pleasant chat about several issues such as immigration and education, Brown wished Mrs. Duffy a fond farewell, climbed into his car and exploded in anger without realizing he was still wearing a Sky News microphone. He referred to the seemingly harmless chat as “a disaster… should never have put me with that woman. Whose idea was that. Just ridiculous.” An aide asked what upset him and Brown replied: “everything, she was just the sort of bigoted woman who said she used to be Labor.”

There is something weird about a woman out soliciting votes for the Labor party who is attacked by the prime minister. Is there a screw loose somewhere?

Who Is Killing Whom In Pakistan?

Those old enough to live through the Vietnam War era became accustomed to the daily Pentagon figures on the number of Viet Cong militants who were killed by bombing attacks. A doubter might wonder how planes flying thousands of miles up in the sky knew who their bombs killed when dropped on a village. A senior official for the Pakistan Inter-Services Intelligence announced his organization had proof that Taliban leader, Hakimullah Mehsud who was supposedly killed in a CIA drone attack in January is alive and resting comfortably. “He is alive. He has some wounds, but basically he is OK.” Even as he spoke, the New America Foundation asserted that between January, 2009 to March 2020 approximately 690 alleged militants were killed in bombing attacks while 181 civilians died. The CIA insists only 20 civilians died.

The war of the numbers is an old one and we learned during the Vietnam war the impossibility of accurately identifying those in a village who are killed as to whether an individual was a guerrilla or an ordinary civilian. The same holds true today.

I Went For The Groceries And Forgot My Passport!

Last night I had a nightmare of going to get some milk and cheese when I was halted by the police who wanted me to produce a passport or birth certificate proving I was a natural born, God-fearing American and I could not. My main problem in modern times is a propensity during the summer to become very dark skinned– my mother’s nickname for me was, “the little black boy.” But, these days, someone might mistake me for one of “them people,” you know, them illegal immigrants. How do I prove to some cop in Missouri that my accent is not from Mexico, but from the alien land of the Bronx? This summer I expect to spend time at the pool, and must now consider when sitting in a lounge chair, dare I risk not having my passport or birth certificate with me.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand concerns about “them illegals” taking jobs from “we Americans.” I am rather upset “those people” work in meat packing jobs which means, at age 79, no one will hire me in Omaha, Nebraska, let alone can I get hired doing garden work. I was so looking forward in my retirement to that meat packing job, but those foreigners will get it.

My question to Republicans and Tea Party folk who support checking on “them people,” is: exactly how many Tea Party folk does it take to build a fence around America?

Are Aliens Harmful To Humans?

Noted British scientist Stephen Hawking warned the world that seeking contact with alien life forms could be dangerous to our health. He compared arrival of aliens on Earth to Columbus wandering into the Western Hemisphere and spreading death and destruction. “If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn our well for Native Americans.” He believes advanced life form “would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach.” He did add, “the real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.”

As a visitor from the planet of Xul, I take umbrage at the remarks of this noted human scientist. Together with my fellow Xulians we are simply here to observe the madness of human life forms and already have informed the Planetary Council that no human should be allowed to pass into outer space. Who would want these savage, war crazed life forms on their planet. Sorry, Mr. Hawking, it is YOU HUMANS who are the monsters, not we alien life forms.

Iraq Heads For Electoral Chaos

Last month Iraq had an election for members of Parliament and Prime Minister Maliki’s party came in second with 89 seats to its major opponent which had 91. In most democratic societies since neither party has an absolute majority a coalition would be formed, but this is Iraq, the American model of democracy. Maliki was upset that after holding an election, he did not win, after all, isn’t the purpose of elections ensuring that governments win them? Why hold an election if you lose is the question in his mind? A judicial review committee is attempting to make things turn out OK for Maliki by simply declaring that several candidates who won under the banner of Ayad Allawi’s party are declared to be ineligible of serving since they had connections to the government of Saddam Hussein.

A reality check would reveal that most political leaders in Saddam’s Iraq had to be part of a government political party. If that was illegal, why were they allowed to run in the first place?

What was that idea about American soldiers leaving by 2011?
