Catholic Common Sense In Sweden

We apparently are in an era when people seek to outdo one another in depicting leaders of religious bodies in other than pleasant ways. The youth wing of the Swedish Social Democrats (SSU) printed a caricature in their newspaper that does not make Pope Benedict XVI come across as a sympathetic person. The cartoon has the pontiff sitting in a chair and reaching out to a mother with a child in order to have the little girl sit on his lap from which a huge bulge appears under his robe and he says, “Let the child come to me.” Daniel Suhonen insists it is not a personal attack on the pope. “It’s a sharply acidic satirical image that reflects the systematic abuse of children at the hands of representatives of the Catholic Church. It’s not an attack on the pope.” If one is going to be a satirist please do not satirize oneself with such silly remarks. Of course, it is an attack on Pope Benedict XVI.

A spokesperson for the Catholic Church in Sweden, Maria Hasselgren pointed out the editor made clear he would not draw caricatures about Muslim leaders because Muslims are an oppressed minority in Sweden. She then shrugged her shoulders, and said the Catholic Church would not protest the caricature because all that would do is make it famous.

Thank God for some common sense on the part of the Swedish Catholic Church. If attacked, grin and bear it–and keep your mouth shut!

Jamaican Drug Lord A Dud As Leader

The bloody battle of Kingston is drawing to a close with at least 74 dead people and over a hundred wounded while hundreds are now in jail who decided to protect their “Godfather,” Christopher “Dudus” Coke. The streets of Tivoli Gardens in Kingston are littered with debris and body parts as a result of massive police and army attacks on the stronghold of notorious drug lord Chris Coke, who, according to reports, escaped the madness that he created. His father was a drug leader in the famous “Shower Posse”– the name derives from showering enemies with bullets, and he grew up to become leader of the gang. Yes, like a good Godfather, Chris bestowed some of his largesse among the poor people of Tivoli Gardens, but for each crumb they received he undoubtedly receiving millions. It is simply another modern story of “Jesse James,” who “stole from the rich and gave to himself except for the few dollars thrown around to create another myth of the “good robber.”

At last reports, Coke’s children are in safety, but two of his brothers and a sister are dead because while he escaped they remained to fight his battles. I await a Hollywood film starring Chris Coke, “Jamaican Godfather” would be a good title.

SEGREGATION TALES

It increasingly has become evident that many supporters of people like Rand Paul completely misunderstand issues involved in ending segregation. They invariably pose discussion of integration as one of “property rights” and the individual’s right to decide what happens to his property, and that individuals have a right to decide who does or does not enter their property. Let me begin with a story told me by a cousin who was in training at Ft. Benning,Georgia on his way to landing on Omaha Beach. He was on a trolley when a black woman carrying packages entered, as a good New Yorker, he rose and offered his seat. The trolley car conductor halted the trolley and insisted my cousin had to return to his seat because the LAW said, he did NOT have the right to give his seat to a black person. Segregation was a LEGAL SYSTEM, not a personal decision. During WWII, Southern states even had segregated bomb shelters!! The most outrageous example of segregation occurred during WWII when captured German and Italian soldiers who had fought against British and American soldiers were sent to the American south and placed in POW camps. Unlike today, during WWII, the USA respected the Geneva Conventions regarding prisoners, even those who were dedicated Nazis. The Geneva Conventions allows POWs to work if paid and thousands of German prisoners in the South took advantage. In my files, I have a famous cartoon which depicts a German POW entering a WHITE ONLY restaurant(many POWS got weekend passes and they could go to town and spend their money) while his Negro guard can not!!

Segregation laws prevented Negro men and women from gaining access to hospitals, it prevented attending university law and medical schools, it even dictated entry to a circus. Perhaps, Mr. Rand Paul can defend Southern laws which MADE ILLEGAL A MARRIAGE BETWEEN A WHITE AND BLACK SKINNED PERSON. Talk about INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS!! Mr. Rand Paul is a nice man, unfortunately, he lacks knowledge the system of segregation and its impact on the lives of Negro and white people.

How about a trip to the library, Mr. Rand Paul??

A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS

A man in Denmark did something I have dreamed about my entire life. He is a fanatic fan of the Manchester United team and wants the world to know that he knows more about the game of football than anyone else. He took a few drinks, got soused, hopped in a cab and drove across the entire country to the home of a man who is head of the Manchester United fan club. He stood in the street outside the house and shouted to the world, “I know more abut the Manchester United than you do.” Police received a report from neighbors that a drunken man was yelling in the street about his knowledge of football and would they please restrain the poor deluded man. Of course, after telling the world what he knew about football, he then serenaded the neighborhood with songs and chants for his favorite team. Police quietly escorted the man to the nearest train station and told him he could get a cab ride home or take the next train. They left him quietly mumbling chants.

Ah, how often have I dreamed of appearing before the home of Mr. Dolan, who owns the New York Knickerbockers and shouting my knowledge of how to make this a great team. Instead, I remain sober and silent. Ah, for the daring of a Dane inside me!!

India–Pakistan –Facing The Wrong Way?

During the past thirty years over a million soldiers have been gathered on the border of India and Pakistan awaiting the call to arms. They daily practice for a war that will never come, generals inspect men who will spend their entire life sitting in bunkers, flying planes, engaged in maneuvers for a war that simply can not be fought since both sides have atomic weapons. As these hundreds of thousands of men sit idly by, growing bored, spending endless hours at target practice in order to become skilled at doing nothing, within their respective nations, there are armed militants attacking mosques, holy places, blowing up trains, killing members of the police and creating mayhem. Maoist militants in India just blew up a train, they also blew up a bus and killed 31 police and earlier in the month, ambushed a patrol and killed 70 soldiers. Of course, India lacks soldiers to confront the 20,000 Maoists who wander through 20 of the 29 states in the nation not worrying about being harassed because the soldiers of India are facing Pakistani soldiers.

It is time for Pakistan and India to have a meeting, agree to focus on their internal issues, and accept the reality there will be no further fighting between the two nations. At the meeting, they could also find a peaceful resolution of the long standing conflict over Kashmir and get on with the task of ridding their respective nations of militants.

Wanted–Suicide Bombers Who Seek Heaven!

The situation is becoming desperate in Iraq these days, it is difficult to even find a nice, non-shaven foreign born man who is willing to put on a vest loaded with explosives and blow himself up in order to serve the dictates of his religion and get himself a nice final resting place up in Heaven– or wherever one goes who kills self and others. According to Iraq Foreign Minister Hoshyr Zebari, “the shortage of suicide bombers is because Islamic fundamentalists are more interested in Afghanistan and Pakistan these days.” They figure the Americans will soon be gone, and they have used up the supply of foreigners who enjoy killing themselves so what is one to do about the situation? We wish to offer a solution to the Iraq al-Qaeda which should simplify there quest for suicide bombers. Get a cartoonist, have him draw cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in some sort of unusual situation, and print them in Iraq. That is certain to arouse the anger of young men and among them one can find a new source of suicide bombers. Or, get some women to walk through the streets holding hands with a strange man, that in itself, should bring in at least twenty suicide bombers.

Of course, as a last resort, al-Qaeda, Iraq, can hold contests or bake sales to raise money or whatever, in order to get new suicide bombers. How about the slogan:”buy a cupcake to help purchase vests for young men they can use to blow themselves up.”

It is time for al-Qaeda, Iraq, to think outside the box and employ creative thinking to get new suicide bombers.

Russia Slammed On Human Rights Abuses

Russia is a democratic nation, at least, that is the claim of its President Medvedev who has spoken continually about the need to ensure that rights of citizens were not abused. There is no question he has a paper trail which documents his STATEMENTS concerning the importance of respecting human rights. Unfortunately, according to Amnesty International, “we saw steps like President Medvdev speaking to civil society on the other hand, we also saw (Chechen human rights activist Natalya) Estemirova abducted from the street in broad daylight and killed. This clearly shows things are not right” in the state of Russia. Nicola Duckworth believes there is abundant evidence “the(Russian) legal system seems utterly ineffective in prosecuting those who are responsible for attacks on human rights activists, journalists, and lawyers.” I believe Amnesty International is confused concerning the meaning of human rights in Putin, Russia. The record clearly shows that human rights ARE being respected. Those who kill individuals making nasty remarks about the government are liquidated by individuals who uphold the human right of the Russian government to always be correct.

If Ms. Duckworth doubts the human rights of killers is upheld in Putin, Russia, just go to Moscow and make some insulting remarks about our Great Leader.

Tragedy In Jamaica Continues

Young Jamaicans grab their guns and plunge into the streets of Kingston. They erect barriers and string barbed wire atop their defensive positions in order to prevent police and soldiers from entering the Tivoli Gardens hideout of the suspected drug lord, Christopher Coke. Day after day, these young men fight as though possessed with the spirit of an avenging angel in order to protect a man who sells drugs, who uses children to gather wealth and power for himself, who laughs at all forms of authority other than his own. The latest account is that at least 73 human being are dead in this struggle to destroy the power of a thug and gangster whose only contribution to life is death. The real question is not whether Christopher Coke is guilty of being a drug lord or not, the real question is why young men are so willing to risk their lives in defense of death. Why do they man the barricades in order to defend a man whose product is destructive to the lives of so many people?

The answer to these questions is simple. Christopher Coke throws a few thousand around in Tivoli Gardens in order to pose as a benefactor. The solution to eliminating such men is jobs for people, decent health care and social services and opportunities for young people to do something for society that makes them obtain healthy self concept.

“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” Impacts Women And Minorities!

President Obama in his run for the presidency promised to institute changes in the infamous “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy which compels those who serve the nation to become liars if they wish to continue risking their lives in order to protect the American people. A new study reveals a rather unusual aspect of this policy. Of the 619 members of the armed forces who openly spoke about their sexual orientation and were discharged, 209 were women and 279 belonged to groups that are classified as being minority members. Captain Julianne Sohn, who was discharged after returning from a tour of duty in Iraq, notes the policy “is like snapshot of institutional prejudice.” Evelyn Thomas, a black lesbian who was discharged from the Marines pointed out, “for people of color and women, the military is an opportunity to advance in life.” A Pentagon spokesperson, Cynthia Smith says the military does not have a clue as to why there might be this disproportionate figure, and they are barred by the law from making any such analysis.

Servicemembers United examined Pentagon figures and concluded in 2008 about 45% of service members who were discharged under the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy were from minorities even though these groups constitute about 30% of the military force. Women were 34% of those discharged even though women are only 14% of the military. The figures do not lie, there IS discrimination in applying this policy.
