The nation of Turkey is a modern Muslim society which currently is ruled by President Recep Erdogan and his Justice and Development party. Erdogan represents the desires of those seeking to make Turkey more conscious of its Muslim heritage even though about 40% of the people are Muslim, but primarily desire to live in the 21st century. Turkey has a modern armed force, but as of this moment not played any key role in dealing with terrorist groups which are on its borders. It has accepted the presence of nearly one million refugees from Syria, but is careful not to get militarily involved in the conflict. ISIS forces are advancing on the border town of Kobani even as another 150,000 refugees, many being Kurdish, have fled to Turkey. There are reports of Turkish tanks headed for the town, but no one knows if they will challenge ISIS.
There is no doubt if Turkey employed its army against ISIS, that organization would shortly disappear and cease to exist. So, why does Turkey stand aloft from the fighting? Some believe Turkey hopes ISIS would destroy Kurdish forces and end the dream of Kurds in Turkey to have their own state. Erdogan is playing a dangerous game that might backfire. Another million of so refugees will impact the Turkish economy. At some point Turkey can not endure being home to two million Syrian and Kurdish refugees. The time to act is now-destroy ISIS!
