If there is one topic that I know about it is the cowardly behavior of textbook companies. In the 1970s, I published with Addison Wesley the first high school American text book on the history of the United States that contained an entire chapter devoted to the lives of black Americans. We were told by several Southern state textbook committees that unless we removed that chapter, they would not accept our book. We did not and thus lost thousands of sales.
A new study of California textbooks reveals the issue of climate change is NOT being addressed by textbook companies. Any reference to climate change is accompanied by words such as: “could” “might” “may’ and students are informed, “Not all scientists agree about the causes of climate change.” Yes, there is Dr. Carson who does not. California should make clear to any textbook company that if they offer such dribble they will not sell a single textbook in the state of California. They are doing this to ensure sales in red states.
