Costing Lives

America inhabits a  world in which many do not enjoy the presence of US troops in their lands. They oppose foreigners walking their streets and displaying behaviors and attitudes that violate normal conditions. During the past year there have been repeated incidents in which American troops commit acts that arouse fury in local  residents. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta is concerned how what might come across in America as “fooling around” can be viewed elsewhere as an act of violence to norms of behavior.

“These days it takes only seconds, –seconds- for a picture,a photo, to suddently become an international headline. And these headlines can impact the mission that we are engaged in, they can put fellow members at risk, they can hurt morale, they can damage our standing in the world, and they can cost lives.”

The key aspect of his statement is–cost lives.

Karzai Wants Taliban To Play Nice!

Hamid Karzai is upset at the Taliban because they refuse to play according to the rules of war.  For some strange reason they select the first flowers of spring as the right time to blast away and kill a few dozen innocent people. He condemned recent attacks in Kabul that left dozens of people either killed or wounded as definitely “un-Islamic” and cowardly. How can these Taliban regard themselves as Muslims when they do surprise stuff?

Hamid would be very happy if Taliban leaders  tried out his approach. Karzai appoints crooked folk to important jobs, he makes certain relatives are on the payroll and, in the end, a certain cut of whatever winds up in the hands of those who seek to take over the country.

Chen Guangcheng A Problem

Chen Guangcheng is a brave man and a  fighter for human rights in a nation which does not look gently upon those who seek these goals. He has been brutalized, his family has been terrorized and he has been denied basic human rights by a government which simply wants to control all aspects of life. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Beijing for important discussions with China concerning economic and security issues. So, what greets her in this tense time–the escape of Chen. US officials cooperated and got him to safety in the American Embassy.

Mitt Romney and Republicans now attack Hillary Clinton for not doing enough. The American government gave Chen safety. At this point, things get confused. Initially, Chen praised Hillary Clinton for her aid and wanted to “kiss her.” Then, he complained that he was pressured by the US government. One comes away from this incident with evidence that Chen simply did not grasp that Clinton did not have power to bully China into doing what he desired. He did not understand the limits of power and influence possessed by Hillary Clinton.

In a sense, Chen blindsided Clinton and wanted actions over which she lacked control. The days of America ISSUING DEMANDS on China are over. Most likely, it is best if Chen and family spent time in America as a professor and student.

Chen Can Go Or Stay!

The one certainty in American life is regardless of what Presidnt Obama or
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton do, Mitt Romney would have done it better.  Hillary Clinton worked  quietly behind the scene using the best strategy of diplomacy in order to secure the safety of Chinese dissident Chen Guangchenk, but Republicans prefer making demands and threatening the Chinese government. On which planet do these folk live? Clinton has limited power and she does NOT have the power to compel China to do anything.

Initially, Clinton thought she could persuade the Chinese government to allow him to remain in the country, but Chen had doubts. First, he wanted to stay, then he wanted to go. “i want to meet with Secretary Clinton I hope I can get more help from her.” Most probably, Chen over estimates the power of the US government to force China to do anything.

Clinton has arranged for Chen and his family to leave and he will obtain a position at an American university. The Chinese government will accept “Mr. Chen’s application for  appropriate travel documents.” There is only so much the US can do in  shaping Chinese policy.  Live in the real world.

NOBODY ASKED ME BUT

All too often in baseball as in life, a “hit too short.”

I used to know the name of every baseball player in the major leagues. That was then, now is now.

I am a note taker of life.

Keep slim, keep fit, keep alive.

Entering a new group leads to silence on my part. I am shy.

I am Bronx born, a critic of life.

I prefer eating the smell of pizza to the pizza.

There are those who dream and those seeking to end dreams.

I resist the full  stop at a stop sign. It irritates me.

I purchased a “small drink” which in my youth was a “large drink.” I am confused, is there a “small drink” size?

Americans spend more time on life of celebrities than on their own.

A minister informed the public what God desired. Sounds God like to me.

“Rain, rain go away, please come back another day.” Gee, it is years since I heard anyone say that.

Children gaze at feet, adults rarely do.

It is never “God’s will, it is your will.

Hillary Does It Again!

Fox News and the Republican party have been attacking President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinto for  failure to protect Chinese dissidents. Mitt  proclaimed that if he was president all dissidents throughout the world would be protected and supported. He DEMANDED that Clinton protect Chen  Guancheng against his government. Of course, while Mitt and Newt and others were thundering defiance, Hillary was quietly working with Chinese officials on a solution that protected their face while aiding  the man seeking refuge in the US Embassy.

Secretary of State Clinton announced that Chen Guancheng had made a  decision to remain in China and that it was “his choice.” Under the agreement with the Chinese government, he will  leave the Embassy and is assured of a save environment. Chen spoke with Hillary on the phone saying, “I want to kiss you.” He informed  friends that “I’m free, I received clear assurances.”

Now, if Mitt was president, he would be denouncing the Chinese government and no one would be  free.

Afghanistan Remains Afghanistan

Hamid Karzai will remain the ally of the United States, a nation which he has denounced for having negative attitudes toward the people of Afghanistan. President Obama flew to Kabul, not only to praise US troops, but to sign an agreement under which the US  will provide military assistance to Afghanistan until at least 2024. This means many of we older folk will not be around to celebrate the conclusion of  American activity in that far off land. Even as the president and Karzai signed a document, Taliban forces launched attacks in Kabul.

Reality is that our Afghan allies will NOT be able to defeat the Taliban. In some way or shape some sort of agreement must be reached witht the Taliban. It is clear that Afghan forces will be able to control parts of the country, but they cannot drive out the Taliban. The tragedy is when some sort of agreement is reached the women of Afghanistan will be left without rights.

A mess of the first order is the reality of Afghanistan. Believe it or not, children, some day, some far off day, the last American soldier will be gone from that far off land.

Mitt Upset: He Is Too A Hero!!

Mitt Romney is upset at a recent ad by the Democratic party in which Bill Clinton praises the actions of President Obama in taking out Osama bin Laden. The ad concludes with a question: “Which path would Mitt Romney have taken?” Mitt considers the ad as attacking below the belt. He wants America to know that if he had been president, Osama bin Laden definitely would have been taken out.

We quote the actual words of Mitt Romney pertaining to Osama bin Laden: “It wasn’t worth moving heaven and earth, spending   billions just trying to catch one man.”  Yes, Mitt, how dare a political party offer ads which insult  a political leader. Obama was born in Kenya, is not an American citizen, is a Socialist, hates America, etc.. Yes, Mitt, let’s keep things honest and above board.

Mystery of Life: Women carry a purse and men do not. Why?

I like Jesus, it is the Christ part that bothers me.

There is always a look of embarrassment when clerk gives wrong change.

It was warm in March and chilly in April. Just like in the good old days before industrialization.

We say, “life goes on.” Actually, until a point and then it ends.

Expression, “pay now or pay later.” American youth prefers late payment.

Some place hands on table to rise, I do not.

I would love being on a planet that God created which offers life time replacement for worn out body parts.

Some stand and read. I do not. I prefer sitting.

Some look back in anger, some in love.

Some day McDonald’s will offer laptops their own room.

In my childhood we were taught never to insult someone you do not know.

I inhabit a world of narcissistic people.

What If Mitt Led America?

It is one year since President Barack Obama made an executive decision to send SEAL men into battle at risk to their lives. Mitt Romney insists that Obama lacks executive experience and lacks ability to make tough decisions. As former President Bill Clinton put it: “The commander-in-chief gets one chance to make the right decision.” Unlike the Republican primary, Mitt, if president, would not enjoy endless opportunities to make a decision. But, what if Mitt had been president a year ago?

Mtt:  So, Ron you will make a nasty speech about me if I get rid of Osama bin Laden? Gee, I don’t want to anger you  and your supporters.

Mitt:  So, you represent the Tea Party which used to be for war before it decided it was against war. OK, I will hold off on any foreign activity.

Mitt:  Mr. Koch, I just wanted to check with you before making a decision that might cost some money. Is it OK for me to send SEALs into battle–it will cost some money!
