The French government has passed laws that make it a crime for a woman to wear a burqa while out in public. The theory behind this law is somehow having a woman who wanders the streets with her face all covered up somehow makes it difficult for her to act in accordance with French culture. Somehow, this act of covering up impairs the ability of the French people to “live together” as citizens of France. Judges at the European Court of Human Rights(ECHR) issued a ruling that supported the French government. We assume that people in France can now sleep comfortably knowing that the hordes of Muslim women who wear the burqa in public must uncover their faces to the world. Latest figures indicate that within a nation containing over 50,000,000 people only 1,900 are women seeking to cover their face!
I once taught in a college in New York City in which there were female students who wore a burqa. I met with them privately, discussed calmly their needs and we negotiated a compromise. I was told how close to their bodies I could approach before they felt uncomfortable. I agreed when one saw me in my office, they could bring a friend and the door was left open. However, they also agreed that since this was a public college, they would sit in groups with males. The sky did not fall. Life went on and we were a class in which all were shown respect for their ideas.
Oh, there were also Orthodox Jewish girls. They also did not wish to be in my office unless accompanied by another female. They also made clear that I could never touch their bodies like shake their hands. Again, life went on. Why can’t we simply display respect for those whose customs do not agree with our own??

As a result for new elections to the European Union Parliament forces of hate and anger now have a voice in that body to pursue their program of hatred. It is rather strange that just as America is experiencing the rise of those who hate and hate everything connected with government, so is Europe. Just as America experiences hatred toward immigrants, so do Europeans. Most probably these feelings emerge when people lack jobs and hope for economic success. Much easier to blame “those people” than to pursue programs that might stimulate economic growth. Just as middle class Europeans do not wish to soil their hands with physical labor, so do Americans. Ironically, it is the immigrants who handle dirty hard physical labor tasks in both the US and Europe. So, if the immigrants go, then who does the shit details of society?
The right wing immigrant hating Front National got 25% of the vote for the European Parliament in France while similar groups received 10% in Greece, Denmark and the UK. The know nothings of the world are being credited with knowing something. Again, hate triumphs. Again we seek to blame others for our own failure to embark on new enterprises that will produce jobs and wealth.

Local elections were held throughout France and the outcome was fairly well predicted. President Francois Hollande’s party went down to a crushing defeat. The explanation is quite simple: not enough change, not enough new jobs, not enough drop in the unemployment rate, too many taxes, too many wandering into foreign adventures in Africa and too much of the silly news that all too frequently is connected to the president. At a time of economic distress the last thing on the minds of people is who is the President dating or fucking. Hollande loves to wander around Paris on his motorcycle with police following in his wake as he hooks up with a girl friend.
The right wing National Front of the LePen family witnessed its share of local councillors jump from 40 to 1,400. It is doubtful if most voting for this collection of right wing haters agreed to their calls for restoring the glory of France. Voters were sick and tired of what is, and simply went for what is not.
The Democratic Party in the United States faces a similar problem. Most American voters are disgusted, part of the blame is the incredible failure on President Obama to engage in dialogue and to explain in clear terms the essence of his programs. This explains why Americans believe in his ideas, but oppose his programs. It is time for Obama to learn from France and fight in clear terms for his programs!
