The streets of Athens and many cities in Greece are filled with angry people, setting fires, ripping up pavements in order to hurl stones and thousands marching in sorrowful protest. The European Union and the International Monetary Fund are imposing austerity conditions on the Greek government if they wish to obtain a $165 Billion loan in order to deal with a financial crisis. A general strike has broken out, including anyone from pilots to transportation workers to doctors and ambulance workers. Heck, even actors are on strike. The unemployment rate has hit 16% and thousands have entered ranks of those in poverty. A Greek worker names Spyros told a reporter, “the government has declared war on us and we will answer back with war.”

Unfortunately, for the people of Greece most Europeans have heard stories about Greek workers retiring at age 55 with high retirement pay. We do not know if this is correct, but this is a common belief in the western world. No one feels sorrow for the Greek people. The government will not receive a loan without sharp cut backs in spending and retirement pay.

Perhaps, it is time to install the Rule of 10. This means no one can obtain more money as pay that exceeds 10 times the average salary. If these are times of austerity, lets make all suffer.

There is turmoil in Greece, thousands in the streets burning and rioting and shouting demands for an end to austerity. The European Union demands that Greece impose higher taxes, cut expenses and get their books balanced. As part of this austerity process, Greece will be selling off about $50 billion worth of property to those who desire to own a bit of Greece. We suggest the Greek government has not gone far enough. Why not take the next logical step and sell the country of Greece to the highest bidder? After all, Billy Gates and Warren Buffet could pony up at least a $100 billion which should get them a nice hunk of the country. Billy has a strong desire to help people, and most of his energies are focused on poverty areas of the world. How about purchasing an old established European nation and use technology skills to transform it into a high class society?

First, Billy buys Greece, next Billy purchases the USA and we can all look forward to national health insurance and a much healthier political life.

A Swedish woman went on a vacation to Greece and while on the island of Samos she was assaulted by a Greek man and raped. She returned to Sweden and a doctor who examined her body said there were signs of forced entry into her vagina. Back in Sweden, Jan Tordsson, took it on himself to contact the Greek Embassy in his country and protest against the young woman’s assault. Instead of conciliatory words, he received a reply from a high diplomat in the embassy. “On the contrary, my friend it is you who should be ashamed over Swedish women’s behavior on vacation in all parts of the world, and with what they do with foreigners in their own country.” The rumor in Greece is that Swedish women insure themselves for rape before going on vacation and then return home to file false charges of rape.

In other words, a Swedish woman subjects herself to ridicule by making charges of false rape? An interesting theory and it would be helpful if those making such claims would produce evidence. For example, could we see a copy of the insurance policy which they take out prior to false claims or rape?

Of course, speaking of rumors regarding sexual behavior, we have heard that Greek men………

A “crisis” has arisen over the issue as to when people should be allowed to retire and receive government payments during those post work years. French President Nicholas Sarkozy is proposing raising the retirement age from the current, 60, to something like 62 or 63 while Germany is considering a move from 65 to 67. Even in Greece, where it is possible to retire in the fifties and collect “old age” payments for twenty or thirty years, there is discussion of raising the female 60 to 65 and reach parity with males. OK, there are some ludicrous retirement schemes such as for French railroad workers who can retire at 50 with full benefits, but for the majority of people, retirement is not entry into a life of leisure. Sarkozy and others blame retirement at an “early age” as the cause of massive deficits. In America, retirement taxes only impact money received as pay for up to about $108,000. Why? Wouldn’t it it be fair and fiscally responsible to have the social security tax levied on ALL INCOME? This, in itself, would take care of Social Security deficits for years to come without necessitating any other changes.

The rich, in all societies, never pay the full tariff while the poor and middle class must comply with government regulations. Certainly, in the United States every dollar earned should be taxed at the same rate. Enough, with people retiring “too early.” Let’s make the upper middle class and the wealthy pay at the same rate as do the poor and middle class!!

The Greek government has followed an unusual path to economic success–be incompetent, allow corruption to flow, and bank on not the banks, but on the generosity of the European Union to bail out any effort to avoid governing in a responsible manner. Revenue has declined and the government expects its projection for a deficit to be widely exceeded by reality. For years, the “Conservatives” were all too “liberal” with the nation’s resources and borrowed and borrowed. When “liberals” took power they avoided any semblance of being “conservative” and were all too liberal in borrowing and never paying back. There is now talk of a “national bankruptcy” which could seriously damage the European Union.

The psychology of the early years of the twenty first century was dominated by the culture of borrowing. Unfortunately, one did not borrow for a rainy day, but borrowed for a future that was always getting better. Welcome to 21st century reality.

About a year ago, a teenager was killed by police during a demonstration and his death led to an outbreak of violence in cities throughout the nation. The death of Alexis Grigoriopoulis, was recalled yesterday in many cities as young people respoded to the anniversary by smashing stores, wrecking cars, burning and, most probably, doing a little looting in the process. There is no question that police in Greece resort all too often and too quickly to the baton or the gun. The result is oppression of young people and it embitters students who simply do not believe the police are a force for peace. Another orgy of burning and destruction will not result in improved conditions that end police brutality.

We believe there is need for systematic changes in the manner of police work that leads to less resort to weapons and greater resort to dialogue, peace, and working to avoid destructive conflict. If each year there is an outbreak of violence to remember the death of an innocent young man, nothing is accomplished except more broken heads. The issue resides in changing police, changing their attitudes, and changing the manner in which they confront demonstrations.

A major factor in developing a society in which the rights of all members are protected is ensuring the police force represents those from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds. For most people, police represent the authority of government and if they fail to encounter those of their own background, the tendency is to believe they are facing discrimination. In 2006. the Greek Parliament lifted nationality restrictions and allowed anyone whether born in Greece or not to become a member of the police force. The Interior Ministry has decided to embark in a recruitment campaign to bring in those of diverse backgrounds.

Ironically, the Greek Police union has been urging diversity because such action they believe will assist in dealing with crime. Hristos Fotopoulos, head of the police union, says, “we believe immigrants should be employed as police officers, just like Greeks.” Hopefully, at some point in time, he will refer to immigrants as Greeks.

Fast forward two hundred years and it is 2009 and there are 120,000 Muslims in Athens, but not a single mosque in which people pray is legal under Greek laws. A Greek couple who rented their basement to some Muslims are being fined because the tenants converted the area into a mosque in which people can pray. Several thousand Pakistanis are fighting the closing of the mosque because it is the only one available for them to pray. Lawyers argue that one must secure permission to use an area as a mosque for prayer, but city authorities will not grant any such permission.

Neighbors complained about the mosque which they disliked because it led to the gathering of large crowds of people anxious to get into the small area. For years, many bodies and the European Union have complained about the absence of a legal mosque for Muslims, but for some strange reason city authorities just can’t get around to granting legal permission to pray.

Greece has become a port of entry to migrants from Africa and the Middle East who seek to become part of the European Union success story. Yesterday, Greek police clashed with immigrants in the port of Patras after an immigrant was struck by a truck driver. The immigrants apparently thought it was a deliberate action and they poured into the streets in search of revenge. Patras has become a gathering point for immigrants from Africa, the Middle East and Asian immigrants who seek to hop across the Adriatic and find work in Italy. Last month there were demonstrations by truck drives who complained immigrants constantly sought to hitch rides and this frequently resulted in violence.

Perhaps, it is time for the African Union to sit down with the European Union in an effort to organize the process of immigration. This is not an issue that will disappear. In fact, as the economic crisis deepens we can expect even more violent demonstrations and anger on the part of all involved in the immigrant problem.

Under a new Greek law, only the Greece-born children of immigrants may apply for this residence permit, provided they are 18 and their parents reside legally in the country. The European Union does permit children under the age of 18 to apply for permanent residency and there is concern the Greek law may be in violation of EU laws. Greek officials insist that if an immigrant came illegally and has not been able to legalize their position in Greece they will be deported and any children under 18 must accompany them.

Historically, the United States of America was among the few nations which grant citizenship automatically to anyone born in the country regardless of the status of their parents. Greece apparently claims a child’s citizenship follows the status of their parents. The American model is an inclusive one which recognizes that once born in the country, one will be regarded as a citizen.

Greece was rocked by violent anti-police riots in December after a policeman shot and killed a teenager. The resulting explosion of anger revealed deep seated antagonism toward the police among young people who regard them as excessively violent. The Revolutionary Struggle terror group issued a statement saying the police were legitimate targets for assassination and warned all members of the force to resign or face the consequences. The urban terror group admitted it shot at police during the riots. The result of the riots has been to lower morale among members of the force.

The government is now investigating the possibility of recruiting more police from the ranks of immigrant groups, particularly among those who received a Greek school education and are familiar with the law. Christos Fotopoulos, head of the Panhellenic Confederation of Police Officers, said it was time to expand those who are in the police. “As long as the state refuses to deal with the new reality, there will be more incidents of racism, and the police will suffer the consequences when others are actually to blame.”

Unfortunately, a survey of the police revealed they are bigots since most oppose recruiting children of immigrants into the force.

Europe has an ancient heritage of Christianity being involved in government so it is not surprising that many nations still use religious centered oaths in order to swear in officials. Archbishop leronymos, head of the Church of Greece made an unusual suggestion by arguing that the taking of religious oaths by politicians should be abolished. There was some negative reaction to his suggestion, but it is still unclear whether he meant all oaths taken by government officials or some oaths. Several bishops while supporting the idea of abolishing oaths in assuming a position in government also noted if a person can not swear on the Bible to uphold the Constitution, then that individual is not someone to be trusted.

In days gone by, most Europeans were Christians, but these days, Europe includes peoples of very diverse backgrounds and religions. It is time to end the use of a religious oath and allow those who do not feel comfortable taking such a position due to their own religion, the right to just take office and promise to obey the Constitution.

There is speculation riots by Greek youth against their nation’s corrupt politics may spread to other European nations. Yesterday, young Athens demonstrators spray-painted two slogans on the French Institute which said: “Spark in Athens. Fire in France. Insurrection is coming.” the other said: “france, greece, uprising everywhere.” The Greek riots may be picked up by modern forms of youth communication such as the Internet or Facebook or MySpace in order t spur youth to rebel against all forms of authority. For two weeks, Greek youngsters have been engaged in an orgy of rioting and destruction which has evolved from anger over the death of a fifteen year old boy into general mayhem.

Youngsters are protesting against a corrupt government, and against attempts to institute changes in an education system which has scant meaning to contemporary students. In a sense, the students reject change and are protesting in order to maintain the status quo even though they dislike the status quo.

France has all the ingredients for a riot. Students are not pleased with the current political system, they don’t like the university system, they don’t like globalism and they recognize their are deep seated problems in dealing with multicultural groups. European youth want change but oppose change. In a sense, they are rootless and without a vision about the future.

Students in Bordeaux hurled flaming garbage cans at the Greek consulate and there were other similar protests around the world as young people expressed support for the youth of Greece. Pupils staged protests across Athens as self-styled anarchists clashed with police in an attempt to prove the government was wrong about the decline of riots in the capital. Forensic tests appear to dispute claims by the police the 15 year old whose shooting by police initiated the violence died due to a bullet that ricocheted. In Athens a protest march that began at the University of Athens escalated to a riot by nightfall. In the district of Patissia, hundreds of students clashed with police while near Piraeus about 700 pupils marched on a prison only to be halted by tear gas.

There were sit-ins at about 100 universities in which it was apparent students were not only concerned about the boy’s death but about education “reforms” proposed by the government. There is abundant evidence web sites were providing directions as to the location of protests and providing Internet followers with information on how to join the demonstrations.

Perhaps, future historians will identify the Greek protests as among the first examples of the Internet fostering riots in many places.

Thousands descended on the coastal suburb of Faliro for the funeral of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was shot by police on Saturday and thus initiated days and nights of rioting and violence that has transformed Athens into a war zone. Before the funeral ended, young men and women were hurling stones, iron bars and marble slabs at the police who fired back with tear gas. It is estimated in Athens alone, more than 200 stores, 50 banks and countless cars have been damaged in the wild explosion of anger. Shops have shut down and hospitals report a surge of wounded people. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis, who holds a one seat majority in Parliament may be forced to hold a new election and most probably will go down to defeat since the nation’s youth has lost confidence in his ability to direct the nation.

At the Athens Polytechnic, a center of youth, men and women broke up marble slabs and prepared fire bombs and promised to turn the unrest into “an uprising the likes of which Greece has never seen.” One young man commented, “this is not just about the kid, it’s about our dreadful education and economic situation. It’s our belief and hope that this is the beginning of a rebellion against the system.”

Union leaders are prepared to strike and close down airline flights and ferries. Is this the first example of young men and women rebelling against the system which has created an economic mess?

Thousands of Greek youths rioted in several cities across the country over the death of a teenage boy who was shot by police. The young people were armed with stones, batons, and firebombs which they fired a the police as well as other forms of authority. By nightfall, several areas of Athens resembled a war zone with glass, rubble, and broken furniture in the streets. Local TV showed youth erecting barricades as police fired tear gas in their direction in an effort to restore order to Greek cities. Many rioters who were being pursued by police sought sanctuary in the universities which historically are off ground to the police. Thousands of young people marched through the streets of Athens shouting, “Down with the murderers in uniform.”

Prime Minister Costas Karemanlis publicly apologized to the father of Alexandros Grigoropoulos who was shot by police. Most probably the outburst of youth anger is deeper than the death of a single boy by police, but may reflect a feeling the government of Greece is still run by the “old boys network” and is not responsive to the need for a modern, honest government that is in tune with needs of the 21st century. According to Professor Thanos Dokos, “there are a lot of disoriented young people who feel they don’t have much to expect from the future and are very disconnected.” We can expect more such outbursts of anger as the recession continues to spread.

Maria-Anastassia Louka, who submitted the winning essay, noted that many older Greeks were mistrustful of foreigners. “immigrants want to create relationships with us but Greeks keep their distance.” She also noted many Greeks purchase goods from foreigners because their products are often cheaper, but this is done secretly so others will not know they are buying from foreigners.

Other students argued Greece has a lot to learn from foreigners. Eletheria Tsaknaki, sad, “I want to appeal to the government to listen to political refugees and not abandon them to an uncertain fate.” Sometime the words of children are more meaningful than the hate that comes from adult voices.

However, it is more common that Greek schools ignore the needs of migrant children and fail to even address language needs such as ensuring all immigrant children have access to Greek language instruction. Most schools continue using textbooks that reinforce the idea of a monoculture rather than ensure that there is information about the range of groups currently living in Greece.

The study of successful integration is titled, “The Integration of Repatriated Greeks and Immigrant Children into Secondary Education,” allowed many teachers an opportunity to discuss issues of multiculturalism. The author of the study stated bluntly, “most textbooks do not take account of the multicultural nature of our society.”

However, the current Greek government is moving ahead with plans to modernize their nation’s attitude toward divorce and adoptions. Justice Minister Scotiris Hatzigakis, is submitting legislation to parliament which expedites divorce and allows greater flexibility in case of adoption. Couples seeking a divorce will see their wait time reduced from four to two years. The bill urges both parents to work together on a joint custody approach, but if this is not feasible, one parent might be allowed sole custody.

The law allows a couple living together who are not married to enjoy many rights of married couples since either individual could obtain social benefits from the partner as a married couple currently are able to secure.

Democrats Abroad will have the first global primary for Americans in history. Us citizens who are living in various countries around the world will have an opportunity to cast their ballot in a world-wide Democratic primary. Yvette Jarvis of Democrat Abroad Greece says there is unusual interest in the 2008 elections and she has picked up strong sentiment for Barack Obama in Greece. Individuals can vote in person or online and those coming from states which require a personal presence can still go ahead and cast their ballot in this first even global primary election.

We are witnessing a new global awareness in which individuals leave a country to work and live elsewhere on the planet, but still maintain feelings about their homeland. In a sense, this is creating a new concept of a world citizen who is involved regardless of where they are physically located.
