Turkey Fights PKK At Home And In Iraq

Turkish Prime Minister Recept Erdogan has been among the fiercest critics of Israel for its refusal to work in a cooperative manner with the Palestinian Authority in order to attain peace in the region. His comments have been on target and his goals seek an end  to conflict. However, when it comes to rights of Kurdish people in his nation, the man of peace is transformed into the man of war. Kurds in Turkey lack equal rights and the end result is violence.

Members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party(PKK) launched a surprise attack on security outposts near the border with Turkey. The result was 24 dead Turkish soldiers and at least 18 wounded. In response, the Turkish army invaded Iraq in order to kill those who killed Turks. About 18 militants were dead as a result of this action. There are reports of Turkish commandos being dropped in northern Iraq as part of the effort to destroy the PKK.

For one who believes in conciliation and seeks a peaceful resolution of conflicts between Israel and Palestinians, it is surprising no such attitude is evident  when the issue is rights of Kurds. Perhaps, we should not be surprised. It is much easier telling others to seek peace!

Go-Stay In Iraq?

It becomes increasingly clear that American forces will be leaving Iraq and none will remain to handle training of the country’s security forces. Iraq’s government insists if American troops remain they will be subject to Iraq law and could be placed on trial for violation of local laws or customs. Reality is that 400,000 of Iraq;s 800,000 Christians have fled their nation to escape Sharia law and the influence of fundamentalist clerics and Muslims. Iraq has changed from being a modern secular society under a dictator to a Muslim centered society under something termed, “democracy.”

No American president can allow our troops to be subject to Iraq law since that law includes religious features which violate international law. If Iraqis desire to impose religious law it is their right. It is also right on our part to bid a fond farewell to the clerics who believe their version of God should dominate daily life. There will be violence at an ever increasing pace because the Shiite government cannot even work a compromise with its Sunni minority.

The time has come to depart. We regret Iraq will fall under religious rule.

Death Is Not Proud In Iraq

Death continues its daily voyage in the streets of Iraq cities. Suicide bombers blew themselves up before the gates of  police facilities and in the ensuing blood bath at least 25 are dead and hundreds are wounded. As a reporter noted: “the scene was horrific.” There is no doubt this caranage comes from Sunni militants who are allied with al-Qaeda.

During the famous “Awakening Councils” Sunni militants joined with American forces to crush al-Qaeda. But, now that Shiites rule Iraq, they refuse to acknowledge the need to forge alliances with Sunni militants and the end result is death in the morning, and death in the afternoon and death in the evening.

Immunity From Iraq?

American soldiers have been in Iraq for over nine years and in the coming months most will leave. However, it is expected that at least thirty thousand will remain in order to work with Iraq military forces. The Iraq government insists those remaining to train their soldiers should subject to Iraq law and tried in Iraq courts. “If we do not have agreement on the immunity, there will be no agreement on the number of trainers,” said government spokesperson, Ali al-Dabbagh.

Iraq’s government leaves much to be desired when it comes to issues of fairness, respect for law and democracy. We can not allow American soldiers to be subject to the whimsical machinations of  Iraq clerics who  seek to  prove they  are in control of the country. American soldiers in Iraq will be constantly subject to attacks by militants, and this, inevitably, will result in mistakes. Sorry, no American  can trust an Iraq court of law!

The War That Never Ends

It is the year 2025 and the president of the United States has called a meeting of her Cabinet to discuss recent terrorist attacks in Iraq. The government of Iraq has recently forged an alliance with Iran, but the prime minister does not wish to pester the Iranians about terrorism in his nation. He requests the US president to dispatch more troops to handle terrorists.

Back to 2011. The Obama administration is reviewing options regarding whether or not to leave thousands of American troops in Iraq. The Iraq government has indicated desire to have American trainers in its land in order to develop the efficiency of its armed forces. Let’s see, it is now EIGHT YEARS since Bush sought to destroy the ever absent WMD.

WHEN WILL AMERICA CONCLUDE THIS MADNESS!!

Tragedy Of Iraq Lives On

Events occur in all wars that those who committed them wish had never occurred. Today, Bush is chopping wood, attending football games and giving speeches for money without a single concern in his mind over what he did to millions of young Americans. Dick Cheney just published a book in which blame for what transpired in Iraq was the fault of many, but not him. A new Wikileaks cable reveals that on March 15, 2006, a group of American soldiers entered a house in Ishaqi in Iraq and killed ten people, including five children and four women. They subsequently called in an air strike to wipe out evidence of the crime.

Philip Alson, the UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions sent a cable about the incident 12 days after the killings. In the cable he states “troops entered the house, handcuffed all residents and executed them.” This is a horrible event. The bottom line is those who ordered men into battle also bear responsibility for what transpires in fighting. Not a single one of these men or women has ever been charged with a crime.

Silence of George Bush

George Bush is busy chopping wood in Texas while his former buddy, Dick Cheney is bush chopping up those who served in the Bush administration. Cheney has blamed former Secretary of State Colin Powell for the foul up after Saddam was defeated and he has slammed poor National Security adviser Condoleezza Rice for being a cry baby who gave the president incorrect advice. So, how does George respond to these attacks on those who were loyal to him?

George made clear to the media that he would not comment on any of Cheney’s remarks. According to George, “eventually objective historians will analyze our administration and draw objective conclusions.” Duh! I hate to tell you this George, but they have been doing that for the past several years and it is clear that you lied to the American people and caused the death of over 4,000 members of the armed forces who fought in Iraq.

At least stand up and defend individuals like Colin Powell who attempted to prevent your idiotic Iraq adventure.

Cheney Blames Everyone But ?

Dick Cheney never met a problem whose failure to solve was due to the ineptness of other people. Most historical accounts dealing with the invasion of Iraq in 2003 cite his major role in pushing President Bush to give the OK. But, alas, we are in 2011, and as Dick recalls the entire invasion, its failure was due to the weak willed woman called Condoleezza Rice and that guy in the State Department named Colin Powell.

Rich is furious at being blamed and charged with providing President Bush incorrect information. “you can talk about policy differences without suggesting that your colleague somehow misled the president. I don’t appreciate the attack on my integrity.” Listen to this whining woman. We all know Dick Cheney opposed war in Iraq but how could he prevent Powell and Rice from misleading the president?

Colin Powell reminded Cheney that in August, 2002 he warned the president trhat if he pursued the idea of invading Iraq, “if you break it, you own it.”

Turkey Continues Blasting Kurds!

Prime Minister Recep Erdogan is determined to bring peace to his nation even if it means killing off any  chance for peace between Turks and Kurds. The Turkish air force blasted Kurdish bases in IRAQ and an estimated 100 guerrillas were killed. Of course, it amazes me how planes flying hundreds of miles an hour know who was on the receiving end of their bombs. Recent hostilities arose when a group of Turkish soldiers were ambushed and murdered. Naturally, the response was to kill Kurds-and, by definition, any Kurd killed is a TERRORIST.

The Turkish military insists everyone killed is the result of careful analysis to determine the bombs are headed for the right people–down below. Of course, peace might arise if Kurds were according equal rights in Turkey, but, alas, that is a separate topic that will not be discussed or acted upon.

Whatever Happened To That Surge?

Ever since former president George Bush decided to accept military ideas of General David Petraeus the American people have been fed the myth of how additional American troops in Baghdad finally put an end to insurgent power in Iraq. General Petreaus was hailed as among America’s “greatest generals” for defeating an insurgent force in a single town. There is no doubt, Petraeus utilized excellent military strategies, but there is no evidence his ideas on urban warfare resulted in destroying insurgent forces in Iraq.

Two days ago, a coordinated series of attacks by al-Qaeda resulted in the death of over 70 people and wounding of more than 300 hundred. In one Sunni mosque, gunmen entered, identified seven men and executed them on the spot. Reality is that Petraeus did not implement a successful operation because success depends on having a government which is respected by the population and Prime Minister Maliki is just not that  person.

David Petraeus deserves recognition for his military ideas, but use of military force alone will NOT end insurgencies.
