I greatly admire the work and efforts of Pope Francis to transform the Catholic Church into one in which the rights of all people are respected. I suspect that if he lives another ten years, there will be changes in the rights of women to hold important positions in the church. In many respects he is a modern version of the reforming Pope John XXIII who tried to introduce new modern ideas before his death. However, every once and a while Pope Francis speaks of things which are very religious and thus somewhat interesting to those who are not versed in deep religion. He warned Catholics, “look out because the Devil is present. The Devil is here.” I could interpret his remarks to represent a symbolic concept that something termed “the Devil” is around and living.
I was born in 1930 and lived during most of the twentieth century. To have lived in this century was to have witnessed the horror of Death as represented by the Holocaust, the untold murder of innocent people in Asia and Africa and God knows where else. If that was the work of ‘the Devil” so be it. I think murder, death, torture were the work of humans. Heck, we humans do not need a Devil to do what we can do each day of our lives–be beasts and all too human!!
