There are people in this world who believe that God is on their side and spends his time worrying about their lives rather than wandering the universe seeking to prevent it from blowing itself up. In a recent poll, 60% of Egyptians wanted their nation to emulate the world of Saudi Arabia rather than that of Turkey. Saudi Arabia is a society controlled by a few thousand very wealthy people while Turkey has a vibrant economy and millions are moving into an economic status worthy of a modern society. Most Egyptians want religion in government as is so prevalent in Saudi Arabia rather than the Turkish model which respects religion but does not allow it to dominate government.

Yes, Egyptians actually believe Sharia law will result in a more prosperous nation. Of course, 10% of Egyptians are Coptic Christians, but, what the heck, they also should follow the Muslim religion if they want to be saved. Egypt contains millions of young people who cannot find jobs that match educational levels. However, if fellow Egptians have their way, no job, but plenty of time in a mosque will lead to happiness.

The Arab Spring has spread through the Middle East leaving in its wake newly strong Islamic political parties which are ready to assume control of their nations. Turkey historically in the 20th century displayed respect for all religions since secular groups led the country. However, since the triumph of the government of Prime Minister Recep Erdogan, Turkey has been witnessing growing intolerance toward its Christian minority. Pastor Semih Serlek recounts the forced entry into his church by a group of Muslim youth who demanded that he recite Muslim prayers. Many pastors report harrassment of Christians by militants and failure of the government to protect non-Muslims.

Turkey is at a crossroads and its Muslim government must decide whether or not to respect those who are not Muslim. Denying the righ to build new churches, allowing militants to attack non-Muslims and displaying a lack of support for Christians will only exacerbate religious violence. It will also doom any chance to enter the European Union.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan just returned from a trip to Iran where he discussed the current nuclear dispute with Iranian leaders. He was told that “the supreme leader(Ayatollah Khamenei) viewed weapons of mass destruction as religiously prohibited and against Islam.” US Seccretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Erdogan and then issued a statement urging Iranian leaders to translate those words “into a plan of action.”

Clinton is working to avoid an armed conflict with Iran despite a push from Israel for war, war, war. She urged Iran to understand that “the international community now wants to see actions associated with that statement of belief.” She understands one must engage in “jaw, jaw, rather than war, war.” There is a basis for compromise, work for that goal.

Turkey has a government which is led by Muslim moderates who seek to integrate their religion with the model of a democratic society. Turkey does not always follow the precepts of democracy and there are numerous violations of human rights. However, Turkey seeks to work for peace in the region and has supported the rights of Syrians in rebellion against the tyranny of President Bashar al-Assad.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan is in Iran urging its government to cooperate with western nations such as the US, Rusisa, UK, France, Germany and China in an effor to resolve the nuclear issue of atomic weapons. It would make sense to hold the scheduled meeting in Istanbul since Iranians have a solid relationship with Turkey.

This is one time the US should take a back seat and allow Turkey to lead.

Turkey has been led by a moderate Muslim party for several years and expectations about their ability to maintain democractic values remain up in the air. During the past few years dozens of journalists have been arrested and charged with being involved in plots to overthrow the government. Many have been linked to the Ergenekon plot, or the claim that Turkish military officers were planning to overthrow the government.

Two journalists were freed by a court. Ahmet Sid and Nedim Sener were set free and all charges of being involved in plots were dropped. Prime Minister Recep Erdogan would restore faith in his desires to foster democracy by freeing all imprisoned journalists. Trust the people of Turkey and democracy will flourish. Imprison journalists and your claim to be a Muslim democracy is tainted.

Hatice Sahin resides in the “democratic” nation of Turkey. He happens to be a Kurd and is proud of this heritage. Ms. Sahin aslo enjoys singing songs. Alas, in the democratic nation of Turkey is someone of Kurdish background sings a song it raises questions as to the patriotism of the singer. “I have been in jail for nearly seven years. My sentence ran out on February 23, 2012, and I was supposed to be released. The prison administration, however, open an investigation about me due to a song I sang in my native Kurdish language.”

I gather the issue is whether singing a song constitutes violation of “good conduct” on the part of the prisoner. I had better not go to Turkey. As a child they placed me in the “listeners” section of the auditorium due to my lousy singing.

Anyway, how about a God bless Turkey to make things sound better?

In many respects, the nation of Turkey stands apart from so many Muslim countries in the Middle East. It has a tradition of religious tolerance, democratic principles, and a desire to become modern. On the other hand, it was in the Ottoman Empire that genocide proceeded against Armenians. It is is Turkey that Kurds fight for their rights. And, in Turkey resides millions of Alevis whose interpretation of the Muslim religion differs dramatically from fundamentalists.

Alevi residents in Karakpinar awoke to discover someone had marked every home in which a member of their religion lived. Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin dismissed concerns as simply the work of “a couple of kids.” The response of Alevi leader Huseyin Guzelgu was rather different. “They called the suspects who bombed Umut bookstore in Sirnmak, ‘good kids.’ They called Hrant Dink’s murderer a ‘kid.’ They said those who marked the homes were kids. We need to find out who those kids are and those who made them mark the homes.”

Behind those “kids” are “adults.” Let’s get their names.

There is a school principal in Turkey who has come up with an imaginative idea to handle overcrowded schools and children lacking discipline. Mustafa Adyin is as creative thinker and will undoubtedly anger those lacking his perceptive grasp of how to economically handle children who will not learn. At a meeting called to discuss violence among children, Mr. Adyin offered a wonderful suggestion. Please in reading his ideas do not rush to judgment, this is a man who is wiling to express divergent thoughts.

“Children should be analyzed immediately after birth. If they are to become harmful to this country, to this nation, they should be eliminated before they can walk.” He argues that kids are no better than their parents. “Most children in my neighborhood are thieves”which simply reflects coming from parents who are thieves and lazy.

For some strange reason, Mr. Aydin was removed as principal by school authorities. Goes to show what happens to creative thinkers these days.

Fevziye Cengiz, a woman in Turkey got into a dispute with some civil servants and used words that he did not enjoy being directed at him. He had her arrested and taken to a jail. I assume since a member of the civil service claims a citizen insulted him there is no doubt a citizen insulted him. When she arrived at the jail, the Turkish woman was then beaten by members of the local constabulary who undoubtedly were carrying out their responsibilities to maintain law and order.

Ms. Cengiz appealed to a judge concerning being beat by local police, but the judge ruled that his court did not have jurisdiction as to what happens in a jail. I assume the jurisdiction belongs to local police since who better than them knows when it is OK to beat the hell out of a woman.

Let us all remember that courts are for criminals to be judged, not for police to be judged. They are the “good guys.”

Turkey is among the largest Muslim nations in the world and has a dynamic modern economy that is rapidly expanding. It has been governed for the past decade by the Justice an Development Party which can be classified as a moderate Muslim entity. Turkey has petitioned the European Union for entry, but the application has been stalled as EU leaders ponder the question of allowing entry to a new group of Muslims.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe fears a new nation whose size raises new issues. “The fiscal crisis proves again that our political project for the union cannot handle the membership of a country of Turkey’s size.” German President Christian Wulff has a different view. He believes the EU made a promise to allow Turkey to seek membership and the application should be honored.

Of course, the unstated issue is whether European Union nations want to allow millions of Muslim possible entry into their lands since once in, all citizens of the EU can travel to other countries. We suspect it is the “Muslim issue” which most concerns EU members.

Prime Minister Recep Erdogan increasingly seeks to instill spirit which is more Muslim than Turkish. Kemal Kilicdaroglu, head of an important opposition party sharply condemned the drift toward making religion the center of his nation. “At work is an insidious attack on the rule of law and order in Turkey’s ruling party.” He pointed out that hundreds of journalists, publishers, military officers, members of the academic community and politicians have been either arrested or charged with crimes.

The Turkish economy is proceeding towards creating a modern society. This requires working with people who are not Muslim. It also means if Turkey desires membership in the European Union it must abandon this assault on democratic forces.

During most of the 20th century the nation of Turkey was governed by those seeking to maintain the separation of church and state, or should we say, between the mosque and state. About a decade ago the Justice and Development Party(AKP) gained political power in the country. It presented itself as a moderate Muslim party that respected the rights of those who were either not Muslim or Muslims who prefer separation of mosque and state. As each election has led to increased voting power, the AKP has become more and more vocal concerning its religious goals.

Prime Minister Recep Erdogan made clear what he desired. “Do you expect the conservative democrat AK Party to raise atheist generations? This may be your objective, but not ours. We will raise a generation that is conservative and democratic and embraces the values and historical principles of this nation.”

I regret to inform PM Erdogan, but in a “democratic society, ” children are NOT raised to believe in the philosophy and values of A political party. If they are raised in the Erdogan approach it is a dictatorial society.

A court in Turkey has developed some interesting guidelines that define the act of rape in rather unusual ways. A 40 year old woman who has been diagnosed with disabilities lives with three children who suffer from similar issues of life. he was confronted by a man who proceeded to rape her. “When I said that I did not want to have sex with him he said: ‘I will kill you and your children if you refuse.’ His family was wealthy and I could not refuse.”

In most normal societies, the above is a description of rape, but not according to this court in Turkey. They concluded it was consensual sex because she did not resist or cry out for help!! In their view, no scream, no rape. The rapist was released from jail.

Oh the only female judge on the panel was absent on the day of this verdict!

There is no historical doubt that during World War I hundreds of thousands of Armenian people in Turkey were murdered by the government. There is no doubt that during World War II over six million Jews were murdered by the German government. The people of Germany have acknowledged what happened and through honest education programs enabled their children to learn about a horrible event in their nation’s history. In America, schools teach about the murder of Indians and the internment of Japanese Americans during WWII.

For some reason, Turkey continues to deny reality as though acknowledging what happened in the past somehow reflects on current society. The French government has made denying the Holocaust a crime and now seeks to make denying the Armenian genocide a crime. Passing laws to forbid people to express opinions is a violation of free speech. If someone denies the Holocaust, it is my responsibility to engage them in the marketplace of ideas. The same is true about the Armenian genocide.

The government of Turkey has engaged in warfare against Kurdish rebels due to its systematic programs of discrimination and second class citizenship toward Kurds. The result has been a nasty and brutal war in which both sides have resorted to tactics resulting in death of innocent people. Leyla Zana is a Kurd who serves in the Turkish parliament and apparently lacks any confidence that her government seeks peace with the Kurdish people. Although the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party(PKK) was preparing to announce a cease fire, she urged them to continue the armed struggle. “The armed conflict forced everyone to choose a side. I would never argue for laying down arms. Weapons are the insurance policy.”

Actually, weapons are an insurance policy which ensures death, not life. Her argument is necessity on the part of the government to prove it means peace and not until there is evidence should arms be put aside. There is also the issue of trust. A unilateral cease fire places the ball into the court of the Turkish government. Let them prove themselves unable to work for peace.

One sometimes wonders if those seeking the Republican nomination for president receive secret injections of a “stupidity pill.” Rick Perry once again proved that becoming governor of Texas results in degeneration of one’s brain. Someone mentioned Turkey’s Justice and Development Party as Islamic which sent Rick off on a rocky road of nonsense. “Obviously, when you have a country which is being ruled by what many would perceive to be Islamist terrorists, when you start seeing that type of activity against their own people…. not only is it time for us to have a conversation about whether or not they belong to be in NATO but it’s time for the United States, when we look at their foreign aid, to go to zero with it.”

Rick did serve in Turkey during his time in service. Let’s look at the record:

1. Turkey has freedom of religion and there are still Jews in the country.

2. There currently is a fight over whether wearing the niqab should be allowed in college classrooms.

3. Name a terrorist group funded by Turkey is the real question!

4. Yes, there have been restrictions of freedom of the press and there is still conflict over the Kurdish issue, but these do not translate into terming Turkey a friend of terrorism.

5. Israel refused to allow aid to people in Gaza, Turkish boats were attacked and Turkish citizens killed. Turkey asked for an apology and Israel refused.

Western nations love to portray Turkey as an example of a “moderate Muslim” nation in which principles of democracy are respected. Over 100 journalists linger in jail because they dare writing the truth in the democratic nation of Turkey. An Istanbul court refused to order the release of two journalists who are charged with having links to the Ergenekon clique which supposedly plotted to overthrow the government of Turkey.

Journalists Nedim Sener and Ahmet Sik were denied freedom. Sik told the media: “To silence journalists is to silence the people. It is journalism that is on trial here, and the principle of confidentiality of the news source that is being strangled out.” He is a journalist and made clear that he printed the truth, and “never received orders from anyone.”

If Turkey’s “moderate Muslims” stifle press freedom, what do Egyptians and Tunisians have to fear?

President Abbas of the Palestinian Authority is the best friend that Israel can possess in the Middle East and he accepted an invitation from King Abdullah II of Jordan to hold peace negotiations with Israel officials. Even as these talks began, Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh was in Turkey being hailed as an important leader by Turkish leaders. To make things even more complex, exiled Hamas leader Khaled Meshal has indicated a willingness to work with Abbas in the cause of peace.

The issues are rather simple:

1. Israel MUST halt further construction of settlements in the West Bank while discussions are being held.

2. Israel MUST halt further construction of Jewish housing in Jerusalem while discussions are being held.

3. If Israel refuses to cooperate with Fatah and Meshal it faces the prospect of a new Intifada which will transform the Middle East into a center of death and anger.

4. Religious fanatics in Israel and Middle Eastern Arab nations refuse to talk and prefer standing on “principles.” Peace is the only principle of importance at this time in history and it requires compromise on the part of all involved in the process of peace.

President Obama and the US military insist that drones never make a mistake. When a drone spots a house in which there is a man who the drone knows is a militant, then the missile kills the right person. Turkish planes were alerted by a drone that Kurdish rebels were moving toward their border, so planes blasted away at the enemy. It turns out the “militants” were simply a group of smugglers who had loaded up goods on their donkeys and horses in order to do some honest smuggling. At least 35 are now dead and others are wounded.

The tragedy if that American officials and military “experts” insist that planes thousands of feet in the air are always right when blasting “militants” on the ground. America played this game during the Vietnam war when thousands of innocent Vietnamese were killed by plane attacks as part of the “body count” game that enabled the US military to proclaim it was winning the body war against the Viet Cong. The game goes on only today the body count is a Taliban or a member of al-Qaeda. Don’t you believe a drone knows what goes on in the mind of someone it is killing?

Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan is furious at the a proposed bill in the French parliament which makes denying there was a genocide against Armenians in Turkey during WWI to be a crime that could lead to a fine of $58,000 and possible prison sentence. Erdogan threatened sanctions against France. “Tomorrow I will probably announce what we will do at the first stage and the kind of sanctions we will have in the second and third stages.” He insists printing stories about murder of Armenians “denigrates Turkish history.”

1. The US Congress publicly apologized to people of Japanese American ancestry over their internment during WWII.

2. American school textbooks are filled with stories about oppression of Native Americans.

3. American school textbooks are filled with stories about the evils of slavery.

4. Germany has done a fantastic job in its schools to teach children about the horrors of the Holocaust.

Armenians were murdered during this genocide. American Ambassador Morgenthau at the time sent detailed reports what he and his staff witnessed about Armenians being murdered by the thousands. It does NOT denigrate one’s national heritage to be open concerning past mistakes. It demonstrates maturity as a society.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Erdogan is not going to end the genocide war against France until: (a) France admits it committed genocide during its colonial rule in Algeria, (b) France admits there was no genocide against Armenians in Turkey in 1915, or (c) we all agree that genocide never took place anywhere in the world and millions of humans were killed by Martian invaders. According to Erdogan, “what the French did in Algeria during its colonization was genocide.” He claimed that 15% of Algerians were massacred between 1945-1962. Erdogan also pointed out that President Sarkozy’s father served in the French Legion during this time period and thus was part of the genocide.

There are two issues emanating from his statement. One argues there was genocide in Algeria and the other argues there was no genocide in Turkey against Armenians. I get confused. What does genocide in Algeria have to do with genocide in Turkey? Is Mr. Erdogan attempting to prove that if you commit genocide it means you are not allowed to discuss our genocide? When will Turkey admit it killed over a million Armenians and in order to demonstrate moral and ethical health as a nation? The US Congress apologized to Japanese Americans for their internment. Germany has apologized for the Holocaust. Just admit the truth and everyone who engaged in genocide can finally cleanse their souls.

An AIDS awarebess campaign at a Turkish university has proven upsetting to the conservative National Student Union(MTTB) which believes any form of protection against a sexual activity that might result in disease is simply a form of encouraging youth to become promiscuous. The AIDs campaign featured distribution of condoms. According to the MTTB, ”the way to avoid AIDs is not through condoms. It is through moral development.”

MTTB is convinced educating youth concerning sexual conduct translates into telling “our young brothers and sisters they can have sex without any setbacks.” The MTTB solution is simple: get people married. Of course, that assumption is that those who are married will never engage in sex with someone other than their fellow spouse. An interesting hypothesis. I wonder if there is evidence in Turkey that those married never have sex with someone else?

These days it is difficult identifying what exactly is occurring in Middle Eastern nations. Turkey is warning its former buddy, Syria, to behave and cease violating human rights while inside Turkey, anyone who dissents from the official line about Kurdish rights may well find themselves in jail. President Bashar al-Assad murders his countrymen only to discover that old fashioned sheiks and petty dictators in Gulf States warn him about respecting the right of dissent! Egyptian military leaders who fear Muslim extremists do their best to empower Muslim extremists.

Meanwhile, back in Jerusalem, Benjamin Netanyahu refuses to discuss peace with President Abbas who wants peace and hanging around on the outside is Hamas, the supposed center of terrorism which announced it would not use violence, would accept the 1967 boundary with Israel and work with the Palestinian Authority. Naturally, such words of peace met with violent reactions from Israel leaders.

Who knows what tomorrow brings to the Middle East. Perhaps, we will awake to discover that Iraq is going to war against Saudi Arabia or Yemen wants to invade Jordan. Anything is possible in the Middle East. Just hang around for the next furor.

Perhaps, on other planets in this universe, there are life forms who spend their days in discussing interesting issues, but a trip to planet Earth most probably would be an eye opener to any alien. Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Liker Basbug, made a speech in which he said Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey preferred to “the people of Turkey” which immediately in order to emphasize the country was founded by diverse peoples rather than “the Turks.” His comments unleashed a thunderous fury of anger from some who insist the correct expression is “the Turkish people.” They argue the nation was not created by “the people of Turkey” but by Turks.

General Basbug emphasized that Ataturk wanted to make clear that many people were influential in creating the nation that bears the name of Turkey. I trust this clears up the issue and allows aliens to depart — most probably shaking their heads over what humans argue about — and often kill one another about!

The people of Morocco had an opportunity to vote and about 45% decided to experiment with the concept of voting in an election. The end result was a victory for moderate Muslims whose Justice and Development Party(PJD) gained 88 seats in the 365 seat parliament. As the party which secured the largest number of votes it can get first crack at forming a government. Its leaders gaze westward to the Justice and Development Party of Turkey which have found a way to focus on economic development, be devout Muslims and still allow secular groups to enjoy freedom of religion.

Finance Minister Salaheddine Mezlouar has formed a coalition of more secular groups and awaits what happens to the Muslim bid to assume control of government. PJD leaders emphasize their model is Turkey which has found a way to bridge the gap between modernity and religion. Hopefully, they continue on that path toward an open society.

In the closing months of World War II, Adolf Hitler went into a bunker located in Berlin to control final battles of his army against advancing Allied forces. President Bashar al-Assad has retreated into a mental bunker from which he issues orders that lack any connection to reality. He has convinced himself the Arab League, and Western nations are engaged in a plot to destroy his power in Syria. He told the London Sunday Times: “the conflict will continue and the pressure to subjugate Syria will continue. Syria will not bow down.” Naturally, his enemies are thugs and gangsters and agents of Mossad or some Western nation.

Even as he spoke, Syrian rebels fired the first shot inside Damascus. Two rocket grenades hit headquarters of the Baath party. There was slight damage and no one was killed. The real question is: are we witnessing opening shots in what might eventually become civil war in Syria?

The government of Syria is demanding an apology from Syria after mobs in Damascus attacked its embassy causing considerable damage to the facility. “Turkey is expecting a formal apology through diplomatic channels.” Turkey has done a wonderful job in supporting efforts of Syrians who are fighting to establish a democratic government in their nation. Turkey has every right to insist its embassy grounds should be respected.

However, Syria now joins the list of nations from whom Turkey wants apologies. Armenia is on the list because its government still talks about the Armenian genocide. Turkey simply does not believe any such event ever occurred. In reality, Armenians were taken away in space ships and sent to the planet of Xul. Turkey wants an apology from Israel for causing the death of innocent civilians.

Yes, Turkey is entitled to apologies from Israel and Syria. But, life goes on with or without apologies. Turkey should continue its good work in Syria, with or without apologies from anyone. A triumph of Syrians against their government is the best apology.

Hundreds of young Turks who used social networking to link with one another gathered in the streets of Ankara and Istanbul in order to protest new laws passed by the ruling Justice and Development Party(AKP) that seek to reduce opportunities for drinking. The age by which a Turkish youth will be allowed to legally drink alcohol has been raised, undoubtedly influenced by AKP links to Muslim clerics. Ironically, even as it became more difficult for youth to drink alcohol, the age for purchasing a gun was lowered. Shades of the American National Rifle Association. As young people gathered with bottles of alcohol, some shouted: “For our freedom and reproaching any official that tries to prohibit alcoholic drinks.” There is scant doubt many secular minded Turks do not completely trust the AKP when it comes to issues of religion.

A word of caution to the Turkish government. We Americans in the 1920s attempted to curb alcohol and unleashed a generation of crime. Let them drink, and let them shout, it is a lot safer than making criminal what people do for enjoyment.

In her latest memoir of being in the Bush administration, former Secretary of State Condi Rice boasted she played a key role in preventing passage of a resolution in the American Congress of a resolution which acknowledged that Turkey participated in a genocide program against its Armenian citizens. The House of Representatives was ready to pass such a resolution, but Rice made certain it never got to the floor for a vote. I realize many in Turkey actually believe hundreds of thousands of Armenians hopped on space ships and disappeared into the far regions of space.

There is no doubt thousands of Turks died during the war, and many were killed at the hand of Armenians. BUT, it was the systematic program of the government of Turkey to kill Armenians. The evidence is simply overwhelming that thousands were driven to their deaths. The people of Germany can feel proud for acknowledging their role in murder of millions of Jews during the Holocaust. It is time for Turkey to cleanse its soul.

Naturally, the Obama administration has also killed such resolutions. What else can one expect from a president who never met a crisis without running away from it?

Turkey, in many respects, is a model for Middle Eastern Muslim nations because it allows free reign to secular minded people as well as ensuring the nation retains its Islamic foundation. But, for some strange reason, its leaders fear “words” more than they fear “actions.” Nagehan Alci is a young Turkish journalist who writes a column for a major newspaper and frequently appears on television. Last week she made a comment that has aroused fury among millions of her countrymen. She made note that Turkey’s founder, Ataturk ruled in a dictatorial manner. From 192 until his death in 1938 he initiated a one party system and banned all opposition parties.

The above is a statement of fact, not opinion. My statement in no way offers an interpretation of his effectiveness as leader of Turkey. It simply states, as did Ms.Alci, that Ataturk was an authoritarian ruler. There are cries Ms.Alci is guilty of blasphemy because she described reality. One wonders as to why in so many Islamic states there are blasphemy laws which prevent expressions that run counter to majority views.

If the Muslim religion is really the correct way to live one’s life, then it should bve able to handle words of difference.
