There are 1.8 million people of Turkish origin residing in Germany and 300,000 daily read a newspaper in Turkish. A few years ago, German TV tried to meet the needs of Turkish Germans by offering a 30 minute piece in Turkish each Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. There were few takers.
The news is much better from Belgium which has 160,00 people of Turkish origin and 120,000 have taken Belgian citizenship. This year there are 36 Turkish candidates running for public office including eight for parliament.
