The world is rapidly approaching a global epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease which currently affects 26 million. It is estimated by 2050 that number will have increased to over 100 million. About 48% of people with Alzheimer’s disease reside in Asia while one out of five people over age 80 get it.
As a 77 year-old man, this disease is continually on my mind. I am mentally alert and energetic but, this crippling disease is never far from my mind. I think it is the sense that I will be attacked by an unknown enemy, and that the disease will hit me regardless of my defensive actions which creates the sense of panic for people of my age. We truly feel defenseless and as we learn more about the disease we know what awaits if it should hit.
