Female Genital Circumcision Attacked In Kenya

September 7th, 2007 by Fred Stopsky · No Comments

At a conference attended by leading Muslim scholars in Kenya, speakers attacked the practice of Female Genital Mutilation circumcision. According to islamic scholar, Ibrahim Lethome, “Without the support of the Quran, the traditions of the Prophet Mohammed, scholarly consensus, and analogy, that are the basis for engagement under Islam, someone cannot stand up and claim that FGM is based on Islamic faith.” He noted the Prophet Mohammed never had his four daughters undergo circumcision, but his two sons were circumcised.

Although Kenya has signed international agreements to halt abuse of children, little is being done to halt female circumcision in the nation. Most probably, ignorance of the law or the fact it is not based on the Islamic faith allows this tradition to continue with grave injury to women.
