There is increasing evidence that Muslim girls are being singled out for sexual assaults because of the belief their parents will not report such attacks. During the past month two Muslim females at C.W. Jeffery’s Collegiate in Toronto were sexually attacked without any report to the police. Nasreem Admed, a community worker, noted about parents: “They don’t want to report because they feel embarrassed. That’s our culture. It’s a virgin who goes to a marriage.”
Most probably, failure to report such assaults stem from a variety of reasons including lack of knowledge of Canadian law, language problems, fear of becoming involved with the police and cultural taboos. This highlights the importance of affirmative action programs which ensure police represent the communities in which they serve.
