Nigerian Anglican Bishop Opposes Gay Relationships

Nigerian Anglican Bishop Peter Akinola installed a bishop for a United States parish network that opposes Anglican policies of allowing gay relationships. Akinola has created an American conservative branch of the Anglican Church because he opposes liberal Episcopalians who welcome gays into their religious community.

Akinola has been warned by American Episcopalians to cease interfering with their church. However, Akinola said he created the US church “to provide a safe place for those who wish to remain faithful Anglicans but can no longer do so within the Episcopal Church as it is currently being led. It is estimated about 30 parishes and 50 clergy have joined the breakaway group because of opposition to gay participation in their church.
