Merchants in downtown Oslo are complaining at the blatant sale of sex and drugs in the center of the city. Recently, the Oslo newspaper, Aftenposten, printed pictures of prostitutes and their clients having sex in a downtown park while the police ignored the situation. Drugs are readily purchased across the street from the central train station.
The police informed the media they basically were ignoring the situation. As the police chief indicated: “We have to set priorities.” It is unfortunate in America our priorities are to arrest people who wish to use drugs or who seek sex. Perhaps, if our priorities were to crackdown on white collar crime or to halt exploitation and abuse of people whose sexual orientation differs from the mainstream, we would have fewer crimes. Every time a prostitute is arrested, crime rates rise. But, how many white collar crimes are uncovered?
