Women Work Rights in Kuwait Controlled

The Kuwait parliament recently passed a law preventing women from working after 8:00 p.m. The government is considering a bylaw which might allow such work, but only after permission is obtained and it is proven the work environment is “safe.”

According to Sheikha Al-Nisf of the Women’s Social and Cultural Affairs, “The new law restricts women’s activity, it restricts women’s freedom to work.” I am always intrigued by concern in so many Muslim nations for the welfare of women, but equally fascinated the concern comes from males, not females. How about showing concern for males and forbidding them from working after 8:00 p.m.? By the way, why 8:00 p.m. and not 9:00 p.m.?
