Recent studies indicate Yarl’s Wood, a major detention center for women is the scene of brutality, psychological and physical abuse, and dehumanization of detainees. Many women who are awaiting deportation are held in the center which puts them in a prison while awaiting return to nations which may well abuse women.
There is now a documented study revealing over 56 cases of torture and physical abuse including at least 20 cases of rape. There are examples of women being denied access to the National Health Services and even being denied medicine for HIV treatment.
We live in the 21st century and I am continually amazed how these stories emerge, tales that Charles Dickens could have written in the 19th century. When, will we ever learn to treat people with respect for their dignity.
