It was most probably just a matter of time before the Obama administration made some dramatic moves to instill a sense there would be military changes in Afghanistan after eight years of stumbling and bumbling that has witnessed the growth of the Taliban, not its decline. Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced the firing of General David McKiernan and his replacement by a team of generals who have expertise in counter-insurgency tactics — General Stanley McChrystal and General David Rodriguez. The firing most probably ends the military career of McKiernan.
The new generals have been trained and worked in counter-insurgency which now will be the main focus of American military tactics in Afghanistan. At this point, something new is needed in Afghanistan rather than continuation of past strategies.
