Agonizing Choices in Iraq

American military forces have now been actively engaged in fighting for nearly six years since the initial invasion of Afghanistan. The time is drawing near for some agonizing decisions regarding continued and future use of our military. There is little doubt American troops will be in Iraq throughout 2008 regardless of who is running for president. There is a strong possibility at some point next year, the president will have to decide whether or not to extend deployment time, whether or not to reduce time at home, and what to do about Iraq if the planned training of Iraqi soldiers is not successful.

There is also another problem which is generally ignored. What if a new situation arises requiring use of military force by the United States. Can this be accomplished using existing forces? Or, will there be need for some type of draft?
