Bush Threatens Veto of Deployment Bill

A House committee passed legislation which guarantees as much time at home as members of the military spend being deployed overseas. National Guard and Reservists would be assured they would remain home three times longer than their last deployment overseas.

President Bush has made it clear he will veto such legislation. He wants the military to have complete control over length of service for the military. Many in Congress are concerned about the future impact on the National Guard and Reserve of compelling their members to have three or four deployments without much time at home. There is fear we will witness a large scale drop in enlistment if the present situation continues.
