The Marine Corps is experiencing a shock as new figures reveal continuation of a decline in the number of men and women from minority backgrounds who are enlisting in the Corps. In 1979, about 27% of enlistments were those from minority backgrounds, but last year that figure had fallen to 7%. No one has a clear idea what is happening, and figures even show a higher number of African American Marine Corps officers take early retirement than white officers.
It is rather a mystery. Perhaps, it indicates minorities, along with a majority of Americans, have finally grasped the situation in Iraq is disastrous to one’s health and security.
