The Veterans Administration is finally hiring suicide prevention counselors at each of its 153 medical centers. There was considerable controversy after the death of Pvt. Jonathan Schultze, a combat veteran in Iraq, who committed suicide after being placed on a waiting list by his VA hospital. The VA denies Schulitze was placed on the waiting list, but his father, Jim Schultze, who served in Vietnam, states categorically his son was told he had to wait a few weeks before mental help could be provided.
Perhaps, I am prejudiced, but I will take the word of a Jim Schultze who served his country over that of any bureaucrat.
