Length of Deployment Up in Air

According to the Army Times the National Guard is attempting to reduce the length of deployment overseas for National Guard units by having more training occur in the United States rather than in Iraq. However, the Stars & Stripes quotes General Richard Cody as stating all US troops deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan between now and June, 2008 will face extended tours of duty. General Casey was asked by reporters when he believed the length of duty being deployed might drop and he replied: “That, I don’t know.”

A combination of length of being deployed and repeated deployments is causing havoc in the lives of National Guard and Reserve units. These men and women have jobs and careers which have been placed on hold while they serve. It is difficult returning to an executive position or a job in an office after an absence of two or three years and not expect your chances for promotion have been impacted.
