Military Expands Bonus Payments

In an effort to attract more members of the military to remain in service, the Defense Department is now offering a wide range of bonus payments that go from a few thousand up to 150,000 for those with special skills. Bonus payments are tax free if the serviceman is in a combat zone.

There is little doubt offering money will ensure more people remain in the service. Perhaps, it is too blunt in expressing a comment about bonus payments, but they come across as a variant on having a mercenary army. The overwhelming majority of those serving in the military do so for patriotic reasons, but the constant barrage of bonus payments certainly casts a mercenary feeling to outsiders.
