The Army Times reports that US military officials are planning on having troops devote more time to training Iraq forces and less in actual combat. The goal is withdrawing the surge troops by next summer and having them replaced by Iraqi forces. There is also some talk of obtaining bases in Jordan and Turkey to which US forces could withdraw with their equipment. These bases might only be used for a short period of time in order to expedite departure from Iraq.
The idea of using Turkey and Jordan as staging areas makes a great deal of sense. They are safe places and it would provide a breathing time for US troops to prepare for departure without worrying about terrorists.
