Stretched Thin and Twisting in the Wind

Army Chief of Staff, General Casey said the army was stretched thin and it was not possible to guarantee to soldiers that deployment would not last longer than 12 months. He thought reality was a fifteen month deployment overseas in a combat area. Last month, Secretary of Defense Gates said he did not anticipate forcing soldiers to serve in combat more than twelve months.

Neither General Casey nor Secretary of Defense Gates is a liar. Both are trapped defending a Bush policy that makes no sense. This is another example of a military leader telling he president that our soldiers are getting closer and closer to a breaking point, and something must be done to relieve the pressure. Bush is making clear his intention of not making any changes.
