The Iraq Wounded – How Many Are There?

More than 800 U.S. soldiers in Iraq have returned home missing an arm, a leg, fingers or toes. more than 100 are blind. hundreds are disfigured by burns. The Iraq war has been medically successful in keeping alive wounded soldiers who would have died in earlier wars.

The Defense Department on its web site claims about 14,000 have been wounded in Iraq, but the Army Times places “the number between 35,000 to 53,000.” It is fascinating we can’t even get accurate figures on how many have been wounded. America hid the Vietnam wounded, we allowed them to sink into obscurity and failed providing them counseling and support. Hopefully, we can do better with those returning from Iraq. They lost part of their bodies and their mental health because a president lied. He will retire and earn millions selling his lies to the public, our veterans will linger on with limited money and with anguished souls.
