General Mixon who is responsible for military operations in the northern Iraq province of Ninevah stated he thought there could be reduction in the number of American troops in the area. He assumed Iraqi soldiers would be able to handle the situation.
A recurring pattern of fighting in Iraq is for insurgents to retreat in face of an American advance, wait until Americans leave, and then return. General Mixon’s assumption that Iraqi soldiers could handle any situation has scant evidence to support his hope. His troops are also close to the Kurdistan border and now that the Islamic party has won the election, the possibility of Turkish armed intervention is possible.
