Mayor Bloomberg of New York along with police commmissioner Ray Kelly insist the decline in New York City’s crime rate is due to the “Stop and Frisk” policy that is in effect. Last year over 800,000 were stopped and frisked–about 80% being of Hispanic or African American background. US District court judge Shira Scheindlin issued a ruling that made clear this policy violates an individual’s right to privacy and equal treatment under the law. Data gave her evidence the NYPD carried out most stops of black and Hispanic residents “even when other variables are held constant.” She went on to note “the policy encourages the targeting of young black and Hispanic men based on their prevalance in local crime complaints. This is a form of racial profiling.”
Fact, nine out of ten have walked away without an arrest or ticket. In the vast majority of tickets issued they have been due to a male having a pocket knife or an immigrant being here ilegally. Dozens of cities in America do not have stop and frisk and their crime rates have declined at the same rate as in New York City. Please explain, Mr. Mayor?
