Death In An Afghanistan Forest

Eight men and women who worked for the International Assistance Mission in Afghanistan devoted their lives in dangerous part of the world because their skills as doctors enabled them to provide eye care for thousands of Afghans who had no other source of such medical care. They were in route to a city when, for some reason, they decided to spend a few nights in a forest, without protection other than their drivers. Local people warned the Taliban were in the area and urged them to avoid going into the forest, but they believed in the modern world of 2010 even the Taliban would recognize they were doctors and not part of any military mission. Unfortunately, they were wrong. A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahed, issued a statement noting that “one of our patrols confronted a group of foreigners. They were foreign missionaries and we killed them.”

In the scheme of death in Afghanistan eight civilians is not a high number. But, for people like the Taliban who constantly portray themselves as “people of the book, the Koran,” killing innocent doctors reveals the hypocrisy of what they preach. They have absolutely no interest in the Koran or any other religious book. The only book in their library is “The Book Of Death.”
