Indonesian Vice President Opposes Shariah Laws

The Vice President of Indonesia, Jusef Kalia, opposes imposition of shariah laws by local officials. He claims local bylaws “tends to make us do our religious obligations based on the local government order.” He prefers people doing religious obligations because they desire to do them, not because they must follow government edicts.

It is unfortunate that more government officials in Muslim nations don’t follow this intelligent precept. People should want to do something, not be forced to do it.
