The Thailand military has been confronting a Muslim revolt in southern areas of their country for over twenty years. There has been a noticeable increase in shootings, bombings and even beheadings by the insurgents. The National Revolutionary Front heads the Muslim rebellion and it frequently recruits from religious schools where ustas(religious teachers) indoctrinate youth in the ideas of radical fundamentalism. There is evidence recruits often come from Indonesian universities.
The military is finally realizing the importance of focusing on improving economic conditions and improving the quality of teaching in religious schools as well as encourage development of a curriculum that educates for peace rather than for violence.
