A major complaint towards Chuck Hagel in his quest to become Secretary of Defense was his belief in negotiations with Iranian leaders rather in supporting the desire for launching attacks on that nation. The Ayatollah Khamenei once again made clear his opposition to nuclear weapons. “We believe that nuclear weapons must be eliminated. We don’t want to build nuclear weapons, ” but at the same time he also emphasized that “no power can stop us” from doing so. Should he be believed is the question?
Chuck Hagel is on the right track. It is important to seek negotiations with Iran in order to halt the drift towards expansion of nuclear weapons in the region. How about as an initial first step, the US demanded that Israel accept UN inspection of its nuclear sites? How about the US demanding that Israel destroy at least fifty percent of its nuclear devices?
Jaw, jaw, not war, war.
