It was exactly one hundred years ago today that European leaders postured and threatened in hope to intimidate their opponents. It was a hundred years ago today that Europeans had lived for a hundred years without any major war on their continent. In June, 1914, the murder of an Austrian nobleman set in motion a month of threats and promises and calling millions up to become part of armies. It was a hundred years ago that European diplomats exchanged warnings and demands. It was a hundred years ago, that within a few weeks the guns of August would initiate a World War that resulted in the deaths of over twenty million people. At any moment during this process of setting off on the road to war it could have been prevented if diplomats ceased threatening and engaged in dialogue.
Today in Ukraine, it is clear that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not back down. One expected after the murder of 298 passengers on a plane that Putin would think twice about escalating the situation in Ukraine. He is not. The Pentagon reports “we have indications that the Russians intend to supply heavier and more sophisticated multiple-launch rockets” to separatist groups in Ukraine. The Russian government insists all problems are caused by Ukrainians. “Those who shot from Ukraine carried out this shooting purposely with the intention to kill Russian law enforcement officials.”
How to prevent the Guns of August in 2014?
1. Immediate and complete sanctions upon the nation of Russia.
2. A ban on export or import of any goods from Russia.
3. A ban on allowing any Russian to enter European countries or the USA.

Bite the bullet of peace to avoid the guns of August!
