A sweeping electoral victory of Islamist parties in Egypt has shaken those seeking to create a modern society which can raise standards of living and enable each individual to enjoy freedom of religion and life style. Islamist groups wound up with over 60% of the vote and this result frightens Egypt’s military leaders. They fear Egypt will become a Muslim version of Iran.
General Mukhtar Mulla made clear: “We are in the early stages of democracy. The Parliament(result of voting) is not representing all sectors of society.” Ten percent of Egyptians are Christians who now fear their right to religious freedom is endangered by a Muslim regime which imposes Sharia law. Liberals want a secular modern society, they don’t want to live under a clerical regime as now rules Iran or Saudi Arabia.
There are times when democracy is not very democrartic.
