It is going to cause controversy in and around Toronto. Different cultures are going to want a school focused on their race. Hispanic schools, Asian schools, Arab schools. Teaching information rather than CONCEPTS results in bored students. I teach courses in multiculturalism and the goals of Afrocentrism or multiculturalism is stimulating critical thinking, not providing information or a collection of factual data about a group's supposed glorious past. Frankly, I don't see much evidence the Afrocentric idea has impacted African Americans. The enthusiasm of Africentric leaders like Asante just never captured the imagination of students-- black or white.
