Each passing day reveals greater confusion in the future of Egypt. On one hand, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces(SCAF) does not intend to hand over power to a civilian government whether it be the Muslim Brotherhood or some liberal faction. SCAF merely has to gaze east towards Turkey where the once powerful military has been reduced to powerlessness by the Justice and Development Party of Recep Erdogan. Turkey is proof that once “moderate Muslims” gain power it is simply a matter of time before generals are rounded up and sent to jail.
The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood wants to form a government, but cannot without permission of SCAF. They will outwardly compromise to get the government because their plan is once in power, never surrender it to the armed forces or liberal groups. Out on the fringe are Coptic Christians who will lose regardless of which group gains power.
“Democracy”in the Middle East invariably spells disaster for minority groups and Christians. George Bush never understood this point.
