Iraq Pledges Friendship To Iran

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki reassured the government of Iran that his nation was not part of any alliance aimed at its security. “We will not allow Iraq to become a platform for harming the security of Iran and neighbours,” said the Iraqi leader. Iran is concerned over the implications of the Status of Forces Agreement(SOFA) signed by Iraq and the United States and wants to make certain nothing in that agreement contains a threat to its security. Maliki said the agreement would never be used in such a manner and it was important to have a strong and stable Iran. Maliki lived in Iran during the Saddam dictatorship and has always maintained close relations with its leaders.

A basic problem the Bush administration has never confronted is the historic close relations between Iraq Shiites and those in Iran. The Iranian government wants Maliki to succeed but the United States has never been able to build on that feeling in order to create a three nation alliance against terrorism in Iraq.
