A school district in a wealthy suburban area of Toronto told students and parents they would provide each student with a laptop computer and the kids could even take it home. A student recently was confronted by the principal and told the administration had a picture of him doing something illegal –at home! Students soon realized the cameras and microphones on the laptop could be put into action remotely and any school official could watch what students were doing not only at school, but at home. As student Tom Halperin commented: “I just think it is despicable that they have the ability to just watch me all the time.”
A group of parents are suing the district complaining it violates any concept of freedom to have the school watching their children at home. Big Brother is now the school principal.
