Mentally Ill Soldier Sent To Iraq

A Ft. Carson soldier who was in treatment at Cedar Spring Hospital for a bipolar condition and alcohol abuse was released earely and ordered to deploy to the Middle east with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team. Health care workers said the soldier met criteria indicating he had bipolar and “some paranoia and possible homicidal tendencies” but the Army ordered him to report back to his unit for overseas duty. The soldier said he checked himself into the hosptial on November 10 after a failed suicide attempt. Captain Tebo, of the 3rd Brigade, sent an email indicating he was having difficulty in reaching deployable strength which would necessitate taking soldiers who fit the borderline level of performance.

Pat Sullivan of Veterans for Common Sense commented: “If he is an inpatient in a hospital they should never have taken him. First we had the planeload of wounded, injured and ill being forced to the war zone. And, now we have soldiers forcibly removed from a mental hospital.” There had previously been reports of wounded soldiers at Ft. Carson being sent to Iraq.
