Democracy In Russia, Putin Style

Even as the latest human rights activist was laid to rest in a grave after being murdered, opposition leaders met with President Medvedev to discuss the non-existence of democracy in their country. Leaders of three opposition parties met with the president about the issue of election fraud who expressed interest in having the topic of election fraud placed on the agenda for discussion, their was a discussion, and all agreed there may have been election fraud which apparently ended the discussion. Look, in Putin, Russia, the essence of democracy is being able to discuss your concerns with elected leaders. They are more than willing to discuss any topic with you. As to the issue of solving a problem, that was not on the agenda submitted by the three opposition leaders. They left feeling successful that their topic was discussed, and the president appeared to be content with the discussion.

What does this meeting prove? It proves conclusively that Russia is a democracy. President Medvedev has met numerous times with opposition leaders and agreed there was need to improve the electoral process. What else does the opposition want from the president? Action?

Mugabe Defies People Of Zimbabwe

An election for president and parliament was held a week ago in Zimbabwe with all indicatons the Movement for Demcratic Change and its candidate, Morgan Tsvangiai, had not only won a majority of the vote for president but had gained a majority in parliament. The Election Commission refused to release vote figures in violation of all standards of democratic conduct of an election. It is now clear President Mugabe will not leave office but is set to fight, regardless of the cost to his nation, for power and control. Yesterday, Mugabe sent his “war veterans” on a march through the capital to let one and all know he is not leaving the stage of power. After a 28 hour marathon meeting, his party announced there would most probably be a run-off because no one had garnered 50% of the vote and they would contest results in 16 seats for parliament in an effort to maintan control of that body.

“We are down but not out,” shouted party secretary Didymus Mutasa, and Robert Mugabe will be the candidate in a run-off. Supposedly, a run-off must be held within three weeks after the initial vote, but Mugabe and his henchman will probably take more time to make certain this time he gets a majority. The party newspaper claimed the MDC was fighting to protect the rights of white farmers who had seen their land taken and given to Mugabe cronies.

The real question is the role of the African Union and whether it will throw its prestige and support behind the people of Zimbabwe. The world will cry for the beloved nation of Zimbabwe in its hour of peril.

A Fairy Tale Comes True-Medevedev Wins Election!

Once upon a time in a far off land, lived a noble King who loved his people so much he made certain they thought as he did and acted as he did because he was not only noble, but all-wise. He decided to allow his noble son, Diminish, become King for a few years while he did noble things like make money. But, the noble King was fair and asked permission of his people to allow Diminish to become King. Of course, there were people among the people who just might vote “no” so the noble King decided to help out those people by casting their ballots for them. In this way, the people could act noble and Diminish could not be diminished by having votes go against him.

Of course, the above is a fairy tale, but in the fairy tale land of Russia, fairy tales do come true. Gennady Zyuganov, the Communist leader who actually was allowed to run against Diminish, got a surprising 18% of the vote cast. That is, the vote cast which was allowed to go to him. Reports around Russia told of votes being purchased for about $15 a vote, ballot boxes stuffed with the right ballot or the polling station simply just sending in the “right figures” to headquarters–after all, why bother even counting ballots.

Some people, who apparently were not let in on the secret that Diminish was going to win the election, actually organized protests in Moscow and St. Petersburg, but the kind police led them away in order to protect them against furious mobs of Russians who love Diminish and don’t want him denigrated or diminished by sore losers.

Such is life in the fairy tale land of democracy known as Putin Russia.

Kibai Tries Sabotaging Kenya Talks

Raila Odinga, head of the ODM, reiterated his party’s commitment to dialogue with President Kibai who was accused of attempting to derail mediation talks by making “aggressive” statements. Raila said Kibaki was subverting mediation talks by insisting the electoral dispute could be resolved through local courts and that his election was not subject to any further discussion. Odinga said “We in ODM are committed to the success of negotiations and are doing everything in our power to ensure the ground is stable for this to happen. Kibaki must als aproach mediation in good faith.” Trade union leaders have warned Kibaki they are prepared to organize workers in mass protests unless he honestly engages in meaningful dialogue.

Kibaki told members of the African Union that ODM was to blame for the violence in the country and that this was premeditated.” How could the ODM forsee Kibaki would manipulate vote counts to ensure his re-election? The only premeditation was on the part of Kibaki.
