Bush Remark Angers India Leaders

A Bush remark has caused an outburst of anger among many leaders of the Indian government. the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janat Party(BJP), India’s main opposition party, threatened to force a parliamentary debte on Bush’s remarks which appeared to blame India’s rising middle class as the source of pushing up food prices all over the world. Defense Minister A.K. Antony told local media that official encouragement of biofuels in the United States was causing food shortages. He termed Bush’s remark a “cruel joke.” India’s junior Trade Minister Jairam Ramesh said: “Bush has never been known for his knowledge of economics.. He has just proved once again how comprehensively wrong he is. To say that the demand for food in India is causing an incease in global food prices is completely wrong.”

Bush made some comments about the rise of India’s middle class which he claimed was now about “350 million” which has resulted in a desire for better diet and thus has led to shortages of food and a rise in prices.

The McKinsey Global Institute estimates there are 50 million Indians in the middle class.
