Just Say Yes To Gay Marriage Says Swedish Church

The very thought of two men or two women entering a church in order to become married is one that sends many people rushing to the closet in order to close the door at such a prospect. There is something about strangers wanting to get married that somehow offends, angers and brings violent thoughts into the minds of people. Sweden’s Synod of Lutheran Church of Sweden announced that it would allow gay marriages and drop any bans against such unions. There will be some minor alteration in the ceremony such as instead of saying, “man and wife” the minister will simply say, “lawfully wedded spouses.” Of the 249 who voted in the issue, 176 voted to say yay to the gay marriage proposal.

Naturally, Catholic and orthodox Swedish churches are appalled and said having two people get married was a “step backward” and a further move to damage Christianity. I would think at a time when half marriages end in divorce and many couples never bother to marry, a good Christian would welcome any couple who wanted to use their church in order to wed.

Gays Denied Rights In America

The American people spoke with eloquence and open hearts on Tuesday when they elected Barack Obama as their president, but, at the same time in various parts of the nation, including liberal California, they turned their backs on the rights of gays and lesbians. California’s support for Proposition 8 which states simply, “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California,” affirmed that those who refuse to accept the rights of gays and lesbians at this point in time constitute the majority in the state. Protestors are expressing their dismay in many parts of California and many blame churches for expending huge amounts of money to push through the ban. Ironically, it appears an extraordinary outpouring of conservative African American voters supported ending bigotry against someone of their own color as they made clear they did not wish equal rights for gays and lesbians.

There is sadness at the idea African Americans wanted to end discrimination against themselves but were willing to support discrimination against those whose sexual beliefs are different. The only good news is the apparent emergence of a younger generation of Americans who one day will end discrimination based on sex gender just as the Obama victory marks the beginning of the end of racial hatred.

California Gays Not Gay Over Referendum

Several months ago the California Supreme Court overturned a ban on gay marriage which opened the doors for gays and lesbians to marry. Since the May decision, thousands of gay marriages have occurred in California, but on November 4, in addition to voting for a president, the people of California will vote on Proposition 8 which would once again outlaw gay marriages. The referendum is heavily financed by right wing groups and the wealthy resources of the Mormon church. The Proposition’s fifteen words merely say: “Only a marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

The group fighting anti-gay marriages are shocked at the enormous resources poured into the campaign to pass Proposition 8. It is estimated over $30 million has been raised to end gay marriages. At the last moment, many Hollywood stars and other important people are beginning to put money into the effort to halt the pro-Proposition 8 forces.
