Prime Minister Gordon Brown is confronting increasing pressure to intervene in the case of a British subject who has been held at Guantanamo prison for six years without ever being allowed to have a fair trial. Binyam Mohamed claims to have suffred horrific abuse at the hands of his American captors including razor blade cuts to his genitalsll. According to Liberal Democrat MP, Sarah Teather, who heads a parliamentary group dealing with the issue of Guantanamo, “The American government have dsgracefuly undermned their own case by allowing Binyam Mohamed to be subjected to such horrendous abuse.” She is particularly angry that an individual would be held for years without any charges being brought against him in a court of law.
Mr. Mohamed is of Ethiopian backgrond who fled to Great Britain in 1994 and obtained asylum He was arrested in Pakistan and charged with being a terrorist. As of this date, he has never been allowed to confront his accusers in a court of law which is the normal process followed in most modern democratic societies.
