Republican Congressman Patrick McHenry of North Carolina was on one of those photo op visits to Iraq in order to prove he is willing to risk his life in defense of America when he encoutered a serious problem. The congressman wanted to gain entrance to a gym in order to relax after his ordeal in visiting Iraq when he was halted by someone he referred to as a “two-bit security guard.” Apparently the security guard did not realize he was preventing one of America’s leading Iraq experts from shedding a few pounds. The Republican leader was staying at VIP headquarters in the pool house of a palace once used by Saddam Hussein. According to a tape, McHenry said: “It is 5 o’clock in the morning, I haven’t had sleep. I ws not very happy with this two-bit security guard” who would not let him into the facility because he lacked the right credentials.
Congressman McHenry has never served in the armed forces, but he does hold the National Guard’s Charles Dick Medal of Merit because he supports work of the National Guard. Why not make it a requirement for congressmen seeking to visit Iraq that they be compelled to go along on a mission into the front lines of the war. Who knows, maybe that will shed the pounds Mr. McHenry is so anxious to lose.
