The world does not need any further development of nuclear weapon capabilities on the part of nations. India is among current countries which possess nuclear weapon capabilities and in recent agreements with the United States it has been provided extensive opportunity to pursue peaceful uses of nuclear energy. India’s prime minister said his nation’s civil nuclear program will not be allowed to impinge on military uses. India was seeking a “clean exemption” from any “conditionalities” that might be desired by international nuclear agencies like members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
We believe in the desire of leaders in India to avoid use of nuclear weapons and to ensure no other nation obtains such capability. But, from an Iranian perspective, allowing India carte blanche treatment in the area of nuclear energy development may come across as unfair. Iran must be allowed to pursue nuclear development for peaceful uses.
