United Kingdom Seeks Leadership On Emissions

The British government announced every new building put up in the country will have to be zero carbon, emitting none of the pollution that is the main cause of global warming. Caroline Flint, the new housing minister said the government is committed to setting an “ambitious target” for elminating carbon dioxide emissions from “non-domestic” buildings anging from schools to supermarkets. The goal is achieving zero carbon housing by 2016, an achievement no other nation in the world has set to attain.

Until now, there has not been any such goal established for non-domestic buildings. An important facet of this program is improving old buildings since only one percent of buildings are new. Under the Kyoto Protocl, Britain must reduce its emissions of several greenhouse bases– chiefly carbon dioxide, methane andnitrous oxide to 12.5% below 1990 levels by2012. This goal now appears to be one that will be reached.
