A case in which a bride had her marriage annulled on grounds that she was not a virgin on the night that she and her new husband consumated their coming together has rocked the French nation causing an explosion of anger among women. The new husband went to court to have the marriage annulled when he discovered on their wedding night his bride was not a virgin. A court ruled in the case which was held behind locked doors the bride had misrepresented herself and was guilty of a breach of contract. The decision infuriated mlllions of French women and raised the spectre that a group’s customs can over-rule French law and values. Urban Affairs Minister Fadela Amara said the ruling “is a real fatwa against the emancipation and liberty of women, we are returning to the past.” Justice Minister Rachida Dati, who initially ignored the decision, is now responding to expressions of outrage by French women which indicates “concerns (by) all the citizens of our country” that are now being expressed.
The court decision raises an interesting new approach to the institution of marriage. The French court now insists a marriage can be annulled if either party lied about something which was stated during the courtship phase of a relationship. This is certainly an interesting issue and should make man and woman cautious about what they say in the heat of passion.
P.S. Can a woman get a marriage annulled if she discovers on her wedding night that hr husband is not a virgin?
