Germany Bans Islamist Organization

An international Islamist organization, Hizb ut–Tahrir or the Party of Liberation, is asking a
European court to over turn a decision of the German government to ban it from operating for a period of five years. Although, the organization is prohibited in several Middle Eastern nations, it is perfectly free to operate in Israel and in all European Union nations other than Germany. Germany claims the group has violated its own constitution and breached the “concept of international understanding.” The Party of Liberation denies it is anti-semitic and emphasizes its commitment to oppose violence. Shaker Assem, spokesperson for the group in Germany, charged the German government with subverting its own principles by “banning a political group and prohibiting its thought rather than engaging in debate or intellectually challenging it.”

One would assume an Islamic group which operates legally in Israel is not viewed as a violent organization.
